PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

Amrit Cement has tendered unconditional apology in the face of mounting protest of its recent diktat over the Assamese language in its official functionings.In a statement, the cement company regretted the earlier notification which oozed protest across the state.   
The Asom Sahitya Sabha officials came out to the streets on Sunday in protest against the non implementation of the Assam Language Act----making it mandatory for the government to use Assamese language in the official functionings.The protesters removed some English and Hindi hoardings and banners on the streets. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to address the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday.Dr Singh is expected to review the major infrascture projects in the entire region. DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, union finance minister P Chidambaram are also scheduled to attend the meeting.The prime minister has already asked the ministries to expedite the implementation of all the north east projects.
A full scale offensive begins in BTAD areas against NDFB-S after the Bodo militant outfit killed 8 persons in three different attacks. The entire strategy was chalked at the unified command meeting in Dispur on Sunday. On the other hand, DGP Khagen Sarma has instructed top police officials in BTAD to strictly deal with the elements. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi who is camping in New Delhi is assessing the situation on telephonic conversation with Khagen Sarma.
AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Sunday question Tarun Gogoi’s moral rights to continue as chief minister in view of his failure to rein in the militant outfits. Mahanta blamed it all on the chief minister saying that these orgy of uneasy incidents suggest Gogoi failure on the law and order front.
NDFB-S continues to spread terror tentacles in BTAD areas forcing the authorities to launch combing operations against the Bodo militant outfit. The anti-talk faction of the outfit shot dead one more person in Mongoljhar. With this the toll in the militant attack during the last 30 hours has reached 8.    
Assam Congress in deep grip of poll mood. Altogether 138 candidates are waiting to contest from 14 Lok Sabha polls. Rajiv Bhawan sources told assamtimes that Guwahati seat gets maximum 18 aspirants. Seventeen aspirants have applied to contest from Barpeta. Nagaon, Barpeta and Silchar have 16 aspirants each. Union minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar is likely to be fielded from his home constituency Dibrugarh as there is no other aspirant for the seat. Ranee Narah, BK Handique, and Biren Singh Engti have applied for their home constituencies Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Diphu respectively. The state Congress committee will meet on Tuesday to screen the aspirants.
NDFB’s anti-talk faction continues to unleash terror in BTAD areas. The Bodo militant outfit shot dead one more person in Chirang district on Saturday.The attack took place at Panbari along the Indo-Bhutan border in the evening where four others persons have been injured. The injured have been undergoing treatment.The incident took place hardly 24 hours after the militants massacred passengers from a Jonai bound bus from Siliguri in Kokrajhar. This is apart from the killing of a barber in Udalguri.

Tickets aspirants are making long queue to file the application on Saturday on the third and last day.Except Deep Gogoi, all sitting MPs are applying for tickets this time. A full scale operation is set to begin in the BTAD areas. This was what new DGP Khagen Sarma told reporters in Guwahati after NDFB(S) shot dead 6 people in two separate shoot outs during the last 24 hours.Sarma said that the security forces are all set to launch the operation to flush out the disturbing elements in the BTAD areas. Earlier, Sarma apprised chief minister Tarun Gogoi of the incidents where militants killed 5 bus passengers in Kokrajhar forcing the government to seek additional forces to contain the situation in the run upto the Republic Day celebration.
