Waiting for Rahul Gandhi

Amid a massive security arrangement, people thronging in thousands in Biswanath Chariali to attend Rahul Gandhi’s rally on Monday.

Security forces are fanning across the district to thwart any move by NDFB-S militants to disrupt Gandhi’s poll rally to campaign for Tezpur party candidate Bhupen Bora.

Senior party leaders told Assam Times that security forces are guarding hundreds of buses deployed by the party to ferry people to the rally at the Kamala Kanta Khetra.

Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Tezpur at 11 in the morning. Then he would straightly leave for Biswanath Charilai to hold the rally. He would fly to Dibrugarh at 1-30 in the afternoon.      

Massive security arrangement is required in the entire district in view of NDFB-S militants’ 12 hour bandh to oppose Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Rahul's rally in Assam is equally important. He has been strength of congress party and he has given its party a breakthrough. His efforts were transformed into actions.

One can see that Rahul Gandhi's popularity is rising day by day. He is very much popular among the young generation and also among the people at the grassroot level. He is putting good efforts in reaching out to people.

Economic blockade called off

Paralyzing bandh

Normal life came to a grinding halt in parts of lower Assam following the KLO-sponsored bandh called in protest against the killing of Brindabon Rajbanshi in fake encounter.    Vital roads wore a deserted look, shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed from early in the morning on Thursday.Security forces claimed to have killed the KLO top leader in an encounter. But the Koch Rajbanshi militant outfit alleged it an encounter.

Cong-BPF MLAs to meet again

Congress and BPF legislators met on Wednesday to discuss the Rajya Sabha poll proceedings. But the meet remained inconclusive.Chaired by chief minister Tarun Gogoi in presence of APCC president and party candidate Bhubneswar Kalita, the discussion remained incomplete. They are scheduled to meet again on Thursday morning.The meeting was scheduled to discuss the preference of candidate. But it was left for Thursday’s meeting at the Assam Assembly secretariat.

Stock-taking visit

Home ministry’s joint secretary Sambhu Singh is on a two days stock-taking visit to the state in the wake of the Bihali incident where Arunachal Pradesh miscreants killed 11 villagers in Sonitpur district last week.Singh on Wednesday held a high level meeting with DGP Khagen Sarma at the Assam Police headquarters in the afternoon, who apprised him of the overall law and order situation.  He is scheduled to hold more meeting with civil and police officials on Thursday in Dispur.

Bihali: CM writes to CBI

The Assam government has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the Chauldhuwa incident where Arunachal Pradesh miscreants killed 11 villagers in Sonitpur district last week.Disclosing this, chief minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Dispur that his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Nabam Tuki also wanted the probe to unearth the probe.According to him, altogether 11 villagers were killed and seven others have been remaining traceless.

Horse trading not required

Education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed that Congress and BPF candidates would win the Rajya Sabha poll. He said that no horse trading is required for it.Addressing a press conference in Dispur, Dr Sarma said that the results would be available on Thursday afternoon day before the poll.He said that the Opposition only pins hopes on 32 votes. But he said that practically it would hardly be proved. According to him, TMC legislator Dipen Pathak has written commitment to support the Gogoi government in 2011 which will stay.        

We will win: Kalita

APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita called on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Dispur two days before the Rajya Sabha polls.The duo are believed to have discussed the Rajya Sabha polling on Friday. Later talking to reporters, Kalita said that Congress and its alliance BPF will comfortably win the polls.Congress has fielded Kalita and Dr Sanjay Sinh while its alliance BPF has fielded Biswajeet Daimary.

AIUDF MLAs to stay together

AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal on Wednesday asked his legislators to stay together in Guwahati to ensure that nobody can influence them for the Rajya Sabha polls.In his address at the legislators’ meeting in presence of opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain, Ajmal said that all of his legislators would vote for Hussian.According to him, the MLA now on foreign tour is arriving in Guwahati on Thursday to vote Hussain.
