Udalguri situation under control, 19 injured

In a most tragic incident, 19 injured at Udmari near Kalaigaon following identity crisis between villagers and a group of religious minority returning from a religious ceremony on February 27. According to information villagers of Udmari and other villages intercepted a mini van (Reg. No. AS-13-C/3682) at around 2 am carrying 26 people who had been returning home after attending a “Jalsa” ceremony organised at Outala Besimari village. When the villagers signalled the vehicle to halt the driver tried to speed away from the scene suspecting the villagers as dacoits. The villagers too suspecting the people in the vehicle as cattle thieves. It needs mention that miscreants have been stealing cattles in the nearby villages for couple of months and trucks were used in stealing cattles. The villagers chased the vehicle and mercilesslt beaten all the people on board causing serious injury to 19 people mostly youths including 4 in critical condition who had been rushed to GMCH. The villagers even tried to beat policemen arrived and set fire to the vehicle and two other bikes on the spot.

Following the incident, more than five hundred strong mob headed by AMSU leaders gheraoed Kalaigaon police station at 10 am demanding immediate arrest of culprits. Sadhana Hojai,Deputy Commissioner; Dibakor Doley.ADC; DR Mili,ASP, Udalguri ; Dr. DV Sibaprasad, SP and Rajvi Hussain, ADC Darrang visited Kalaigaon and Udmari and had discussion with the agitators. Five thousand strong AMSU agitators blocked MB road indefinately demanding immediate arrest of culprits. SP Darrang told this correspondent that more than two hundred police and para military personnel have been deployed in the area for maintaining law and order. In the mean time Darrang administration has imosed 144 in several villages under Kalaigaon and Mangaldai police station in and around Kalaigaon.SP Darrang said that more than 20 persons have already been arrested so far.Minister Basanta Das, MP Santias Kunjur have arrived at Kalaigaon and talked to AMSU and other agitators and road blokade has been withdrawn but has given 12 hours bandh call tomorrow in Udalguri and Darrang only.

One Lawa Majhi (45) was killed by a loner wild elephant at Bormukali near Nonai forest range office in Udalguri district last night at 8 pm.The person was coming home from market while came on the way of two loners.So far 84 people have been killed by wild elephants during last five years in the district against the deaths of 34 wild elephants.
