Assam celebrated Silpi Divas across the state to commemorate the death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla on Friday. Cultural functions, Jyoti Sangeet competitions and seminars were organized in many places to mark the occasion. The central function at took place in Tezpur, the birthplace of the first Assamese film maker.

More arrest likely in APSC scam

Hours after the Dibrugarh police arrested three ACS officers in the cash for job scam, DGP Mukesh Sahay gave hint of action against a few other officers who allegedly procured job for money. Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Sahay said the probe into the scam was moving in right direction. Early in the morning police arrested Amitjyoti Mahanta, Bhaskarjyoti DevSarma and Bhaskar Das to be brought to Kahilipara where a team of police officer is interrogating the trio. The administration allowed them to arrest after the forensic report of their answerscripts confirmed the allegations.  

3 ACS officers arrested in job scam

Amid the probe in the job for cash scam in the Assam Public Service Commission, police have arrested three newly appointed ACS officers on Wednesday alleging their involvement. Identified as Bhaskarjyoti Dev  Sharma, the circle officer of Helem in Biswanath Chariali was picked up by police early in the morning. Police have arrested Amit Sarma, the circle officer of Sipahjar from his residence in the morning and simultaneously another circle officer from Nalbari Bhaskar Dutta was arrested in the same allegation of procuring jobs for money. PPFA endorses 1951 as cut-off year

As the debate over the cut-off date/year for deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Assam (India) gains momentum, a patriotic forum comes out with the support for 1951 as the base year. However, the Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) reaffirms that it would abide by the guidelines of the Supreme Court as the matter is still in the apex court’s jurisdiction. Jamiat for 1971 as cut off year

The Jamiat Ulems-I-Hind has submitted a set of papers in support of the cut off year in the Assam Accord, 1985 before the Supreme Court which is hearing a set of petition from May 8. Police officer held on bribery charge

An anti corruption cell on Tuesday arrested a senior police officer on bribery charges suggesting non stop extortion on traders by a circle of police officers. Identified as Biman Roy, the Boko police station officer in charge was questioned by the vigilance officials in Guwshati before he was arrested acting on the confessional statement of inspector Bokul Chetia who was held on bribery charge a couple of days back.

Was no need of 900 lives for 1971

Amid an aroused controversy over the cut off year to detect and deport the immigrants from Assam, cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the lives of 900 people could have been spared had the Assam agitators signed the Accord in 1979. Talking to reporters in Guwahati Sarma said,”after 900 people were martyred the Accord should have like would be examined-like words. “With 1971 as base year why the Accord was not signed in 1979. Senior Cong leader dead

Senior Congress leader and former minister Bijit Saikia is dead at the age of 78leaving a pall of gloom in the state’s political scene. Saikia, who was a minister in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet died at the Down Town Hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday where he was undergoing treatment for a couple of weeks. Many parties, organizations and individuals have condoled Saikia’s death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. Senior Congress leaders thronged Rajiv Bhawan where the lifeless leader was brought to pay their last respect. Then the body was taken to his hometown Tezpur to be cremated in presence of his fans.

Youth held for death threat to Akhil

The Dispur police have arrested a youth in Guwahati a couple of days after he in  social media threatened to shoot dead Akhil Gogoi. Identified as Nilotpal Baruah, he was arrested by a team of Dispur police acting on a complaint lodged by KMSS. Police interrogation is in progress and the youth is believed to have confessed it. In his Facebook status, he said that he would riddle the peasant leader with his licensed arms forcing KMSS to move Dispur police.
