Jamiat for 1971 as cut off year

The Jamiat Ulems-I-Hind has submitted a set of papers in support of the cut off year in the Assam Accord, 1985 before the Supreme Court which is hearing a set of petition from May 8.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, the minority organization's Assam unit president Badaruddin Ajmal said they want 1971 as the cut off year adding that the outcome of the hearing by the five member constitutional bench will affect lakhs of people.

“The successive governments, mostly led by Congress kept the issue alive for many decades on political interest, to get votes of those people under threat if making them immigrants,” said Ajmal.

His revelations assumes significance a day after PK Mahanta, the main signatory said the Centre mounted pressure on them to accept 1971 as the cut off year.
