NAZIRA: In a landmark development for the academic landscape of Assam, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially conferred autonomous status upon Gargaon College, one of the state's most venerable institutions of higher learning. This significant recognition is slated for a ten-year duration, spanning the academic sessions from 2025-26 through 2035-36. The elevation to autonomous status marks a new chapter for the college, providing it with the requisite academic and administrative leverage to redefine its educational framework. Under this new mandate, the institution will be empowered to independently design its curriculum, evolve its own pedagogical methods, conduct examinations, and manage its internal governance with greater flexibility and precision.
Founded in 1959, Gargaon College has established itself as a premier center for academic excellence over the decades. Located in the heart of Simaluguri, the college currently serves a vast student population by offering comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs across the Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. Affiliated with Dibrugarh University and consistently recognized for its standards through NAAC accreditation, the college’s transition to autonomy is seen as a reward for its sustained commitment to quality education. This move is expected to foster an environment of innovation, allowing the institution to introduce industry-aligned courses and streamlined evaluation processes that will directly benefit the student community in Upper Assam and beyond.
