Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Over 50 school goers managed to escape tragic death in Guwahati when a bus carrying the students caught fire on Wednesday.The incident took place at Nineth Mile area in Guwahati where a city bus carrying at least 50 students was on its way to the CRPF Kendriya Vidyalaya.The bus driver and his assistant noticed smoke bellowing from the engine and stopped the bus at a stone’s throw distance from the school. Local residents in large number came out to their rescue.They helped the students get down from the bus quickly. Fire extinguishers were deployed inside the bus and thus the situation was brought under control.    
Amid tight security, the Election Commission is holding fresh polling in three booths in Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency.Polling is underway on a brisk note. Life in BTAD areas start limping back to normal. There is no report of any untoward incident during the last five days.This has forced the Baksa, Chirang and Kokrajhar district administrations to relax curfew from 9 in the morning to 6 in the evening.Over 1500 people in Narayanguri have been  sheltering at a few camps set up by the authorities heavily guarded by the security forces.Army, police and para military forces are on round the clock patrolling on the streets in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa to thwart any move of the miscreants who have killed at least 37 people in a string of attacks on minority people. //
A lower court in Barpeta on Tuesday remanded 14 persons to 3 days police custody three days after police picked up them from Baksa and Kokrajhar in connection with BTAD violence.Seven of these people arrested were forest guards. Amid tight security, police produced them before the Barpeta Chief Judicial Magistrate who sent all of them to police remand for three days.They would be produced before the court on Thursday again.Policemen found it quite difficult to bring them to the court in the face of an irate mob who proceed to attack them in the afternoon.

A lower court on Monday sent Kamal Medhi to jail after he was produced before it in connection with a fresh case against him.Amid tight security, police produced the KMSS general secretary before the Kamrup Chief Judicial magistrate on Tuesday where he was remanded to judicial custody.He was produced before the court in connection with a fresh case registered against him in Bharalumukh police station.On the other hand, police have yet to got Medhi in their remand in connection with the Pranab Boro self immolation case. The Gauhati High court is considering a petition from police seeking Medhi in their custody.        
A string of violence seems to have marred the statewide Assam bandh on Tuesday.Called by a number of non Bodo organizations in protest against the bloodbath in BTAD, the bandh evoked mixed response.Bandh supporters in many places are on the streets to enforce the call from 6 in the morning. A section of these supporters pelted stones at passenger buses, shops and markets.Several bandh supporters were thrashed by police when they attacked a passenger at Sonaribari area near Samoguri in the morning.Bandh supporters in Nalbari damaged several vehicles at Borkhetri in Nalbari. A high level NIA team is on a stock-taking visit to the BTAD areas on Tuesday.Led by an additional director general, the team of top ranked officials is visiting the trouble torn area in BTAD to assess the ground situation.After collecting the initial inputs from the civil and army officials deployed in the BTAD areas, the NIA officials would leave back for New Delhi to formally register the cases.The team gathered some initial inputs after holding separate meeting with chief secretary JS Khosla and DGP Khagen Sarma.The ADG review the inputs after his tour in BTAD areas on Tuesday.NIA on Friday agreed to probe the cases of BTAD violence after the chief minister recommended the probe./
