Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Lakhimpur girl dies of dengue

The killer dengue continues to unleash terror in the state. The latest victim is a girl in Lakhimpur. Identified as Ilora Marang, the fashion designing student in Guwahati stayed in Zoo road area where she fell ill. She left for her home in Bihpuria. But no test was conducted. IED found in Hajo

A powerful Improvised Explosive Devise weighing 1.5 kg was seized from Hajo in Kamrup district on Tuesday. According to police, a woman saw the IED, wrapped in a plastic bag with its two electric wires exposed and kept near a petrol pump. On receipt of the information, police, who with the help army bomb disposal squad defused the bomb.

Goods train derails near Haflong

Normal rail traffic remains disrupted after six oil tanker bogies of a goods train derailed in Dima Hasao district on Tuesday.The accident took place in between Harengajao and Migrandisa in the district.According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the tankers carrying petroleum products jumped the tracks in the morning on the Lumding-Badarpur section. The engine of the train was not damaged as the tankers were six bogies behind it. However, none was injured.It has disrupted movement of trains, including Agartala-Lumding Express, Barak Valley Express and other local trains at different places.

Akhil Gogoi released

Police have finally released Akhil Gogoi 10 hours after the KMSS leader was picked up for staging dharna in front of CJM court in Guwahati.Flanked by hundreds of his supporters, Gogoi staged dharna opposing anticipatory bail to businessmen Suresh Prithani, Ramavtar Burhakiya and Sanjoy Lohia who have allegedly misused hectres of plots on Guwahati and the adjoining areas alloted to them for business purpose. Gogoi was initially taken to the Panbazar Police Station and then he was shifted to the Sonapur Police station where he was released in the eveining under intense pressure from the KMSS activists.    

Mukherjee on NE visit

President Pranab Mukherjee is on a two days visit to Assam and Meghalaya. Mukherjee landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in the afternoon.Assam Governor J B Patnaik along with senior ministers received Mukherjee at the Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.Then he straightly left for Shillong by a helicopter. Violence mars anti Rabha Hasong poll stir

Violence refuses to recede in Goalpara district in the name of protest against Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council polls. Protesters on Monday set on fire a lower primary school at Puthimari during the bandh called by the Garo National Council and 10 non-Rabha organisations.Two mini buses and a car were also set ablaze in Kasomari and Torangthap area. The bandh called from 5am on Sunday affected normal life in the Garo and non-Rabha areas of the district. The Council polls are slated for three phases between November 13 and 25.
