Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

9 Assam workers killed in Imphal

At least nine workers from Assam were killed and 11 injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful IED blast at Khoyathong in the heart of Imphal on Friday. Six others have been critically injured. The bomb exploded at 7.35 in the evening inside a camp where the labourers housed. Nine workers died on the spot.  Police called it an IED planted by militants. This has forced the security forces to step up vigil in the capital city.

Assam youths found dead in AP

Bodies of two youths from Chirang district of Assam have been recovered in Andhra Pradesh two days after they left for West Bengal.Identified as Dhan Basumatary and Bishnu Narzary, their bodies were recovered at Nallore Railway station on Wednesday. Both they were accompanied by Dawa Basumatary to West Bengal who has been remaining traceless.  

Naottom, Timothy reach homes

The lifeless naval officers from Assam, who died in the INS Sindhurakshak tragedy brought to their home on Wednesday.Naval Engineer Narottam Deuri’s body was received at the Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport at Borjhar here with honour by Navy, Army and Air force officials. BTAD bandh total

Normal life remains paralyzed in Kokrajhar on Tuesday following the 36-hours BTAD bandh beginning from 5 in the morning. Called by the Undivided Goalpara Indo-Mongolian Youth Front in protest against brutally killing of two youth including a cadre of NDFB (Songbijit faction) and an innocent youth at Audang bazaar under Karigaon police outpost, the bandh evokes full response as soon as it came into force.All financial institutions, shops and markets remained closed. Lifeless Timothy, Naruttam reaching homes

The mortal remains Timothy Sinha and Naruttam Deuri are arriving in their homes on Wednesday.The bodies will be accorded a guard of honour at the INS Ashwini at Colaba in Mumbai on Wednesday morning. Timothy’s body would reach Poilapool in Silchar while Naruttam's is expected to reach Deuri gaon in Lakhimpur home in the morning. Cachar district administration has informed the Army authorities stationed at Mashimpur and Jiribam about the development. Timothy's body will be laid to rest in his family graveyard at Poilapool with full military honour.

PCI team in Guwahati

The Press Council of India, taking serious note on attacks on Journalists in India, has constituted a Sub-Committee to examine the issue of safety of Journalists.                The Sub-Committee is in Guwahati and will interact with Journalists on September 11, 2013 (Wednesday) between 10:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at the Conference Hall, Circuit House, Guwahati to examine the issue of safety of Journalists in Assam.

Assam flood scene grim

At least 10 districts are reeling under flood water. The worst-hit are river island Majuli and the Kaziranga National Park. Rising water of the Brahmaputra has inundated vast tracts of land in Kaziranga's Burapahar, Bagori and northern parts of Agratoli with three animal casualty reported. Two deer were knocked down by speeding vehicles in Harmoti area when they were on way to the highlands, while an elephant drowned in the flood waters in Bagori range.

Foreigners injured in accident

Three foreign tourists have been injured as their vehicles overturned in Kamrup district Monday.They were on their way to Siliguri en route to Sikkim when their vehicle turned turtle at Ghakuchi.Identified as Andrew John, Stephen Doneur and Sarit Jay Patel -- were injured in the incident with John being in a critical condition while the two others received minor injuries. The trio  were admitted to the Rangiya Civil Hospital but were later referred to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.
