Celebrated Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua who has earned name globally for his cinematic works has another thing to rejoice as some of his movies are invited to be screened at the Jeu de Paume, the world famous art museum of France during the Festival d’Automne, the autumn festival. The festival which is scheduled to be held in October this year will see nine of his Assamese films.
“I’m rejoiced at this. It’s a proud moment to be invited to such a prestigious event. It’s a matter of pride not just for me but for the whole state and Assamese film fraternity,” Barua said. “It has become possible for the dedication and hard work of all the people involved with the films. It’s for all those,” he further said. With the invitation to the prestigious event Barua is now belongs to the club in which several bright names of Indian cinema features. “I’m really honoured to be in a club with people like Satyajit Ray and Adoor Gopalkrishnana and several others,” he added.
The films selected to be screened at Jeu de Paume and the famous Pompidou centre are ‘Maine Gandhi ko Nahi Mara’ featuring Anupam Kher and Urmila Matondkar, ‘Aparoopa’, ‘Papori’, ‘Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai’, ‘Firingoti’, ‘Banani’, ‘Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door’, ‘Kushul Konwar’, ‘Konikar Ramdhenu’ and ‘Pokhi’. At the moment the veteran filmmaker remembered his close aid late Shailadhar Barua who was involved with most of his films. “I miss him most at his moment he was passionately involved with me in several of my projects. He would have been a happy man had he been with us,” said the filmmaker.
The Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume is a museum of contemporary art in the north-west corner of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. The retrospective would be inaugurated on October 25 at Jeu de Paume with the screening of Konikar Ramdhenu where Barua himself is expected to be present.

Caught in a barrage of criticism, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday directed the power department not to go for power tariff hike at last for the time being. According to the chief minister Gogoi, it is not right time for the government to hike the power tariff as the consumers’ relief is the need of the hour. Instead, Gogoi asked the finance department to initiate steps for providing subsidy to the Assam Power Distribution Company in view of the roll back decision.
