International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday tore apart Tarun Gogoi alleging that the chief minister was hardly interested in the budget benefit. Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Sonowal said that central funds are available for the state. But he alleged that the Congress government has not evinced keen interest to avail off the benefits. He said that of the total 'Rs 63,000 crore fund earmarked in the budget for 2014-15 for North East, Assam was supposed to claim a huge amount to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore. “But the Chief Minister has not motivated the officials to work day and night to ensure optimum utilisation of the funds for the maximum development of the state,”...
Dispur is all set to resume the NRC works which would help the state detect the immigrants. After formally accepting the modalities for updating the NRC prepared by the state government, the Centre has already released Rs.144 crore to the state for the project. Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami is expected to clear all the hurdles during his proposed visit the state next week. During his visit, Goswami is set to hold a few rounds of meetings with top civil and officials, political parties and organizations to take stock of updating the NRC.

There is marginal let up in the over all flood scenario. The water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have stated redecing during the last 24 hours. But over 50 villages in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Jorhat districts are still reeling under water in the second round of floods. Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat. Same it is in Beki which flowing over the danger mark at Barpeta town.
