Children of Udalguri take pledge to oppose terrorism
Children of Udalguri town, the district HQ in BTAD came out in thousands to celebrate ‘Children’s Day’ on November 14 to pay tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Troops of 315 Field regiment of Red Horns Division operating in the area with cooperation from the district administration took up the initiative to celebrate the day in quite a befitting way. More than 1000 students of greater Udalguri area took out a peace march throughout the main street of the town with play cards displaying the slogan like “we want peace, say no to violence and terror and drugs, we hate crimes” etc and assembled at the parade ground in the office complex of Deputy Commissioner. They also took the pledge to oppose terrorism, all kind of violence and drugs and to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Assam as well as the integrity and the sovereignty of our motherland at any cost.
The 315 Field Regiment (Kargil) of Red Horns Division raised in Gujarat in 1985 later showed the excellent bravery and performance during the Kargil war for which the country conferred the rare distinction to have the name of Kargil with the name of their regiment. One courageous officer and six brave soldiers of this regiment also attained martyrdom during the Kargil war. After guarding the boundary of the motherland in rough and adverse weather in the hilly terrains, this regiment has been pressed into service for the own countrymen in Udalguri and part of Darrang district under the unified command structure. While the men in olive green have received appreciation from the people of the group clash hit Udalguri district for their role in containing the violent atmosphere at the same time they have undertaken various welfare projects for the people living in the remote and rural areas under ‘Operation Sadbhavana’. But the way they organized the Children’s Day that too for the first time in the area no doubt will make the people and the children in particular to tie a bond of a friendly relation between the army and the common people.
The display of big and medium guns, automatic fire arms, ammunitions and different machineries and tools used in the war was another point of attraction of the inquisitive children. The children were also delighted as the officials of army explained them the handling of these equipments.
As a part of the Children’s Day celebration a meeting was also arranged in presence of a large number of citizen from the cross section of the society, women activists, media persons and children where Suttumali Subbaiah Meenaxi Sundaram IAS,Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district; Ananda Prakash Tiwari Superintendent of Police ; Commanding Officer of 315 Field Regiment (Kargil) Col. Yogesh Chowdhary appealed the younger generation –the future of our nation to concentrate on studies so that they could show excellence in all spheres in re generating our motherland. The students of Golmagaon High School , Diamond English School and Udalguri HS School also enthralled the audience with their performance of Nepali dance, Bodo dance and Bihu dance. Senior citizens of Udalguri expressed their satisfaction over the initiative of the army to celebrate the Children’s Day for the first time in a befitting way and hoped that it would help the younger generation to understand the spirit of national integrity in the real sense. The celebration was well attended by several distinguished persons, including Indra Kalita, SDO (S),senior officials of the district, mediapersons and leading citizens.
