Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. Hira Sarania under mental pressure: Army

The Army on Thursday claimed that Hira Sarania, the hardcore leader with the ULFA’s crack unit 709 is under mental pressure. Now he cannot repose faith even on his bodyguards. This has made him bound to change them frequently. Claiming this before a private TV channel, the Brigadier with the Army’s 107th Infantry Brigade Arun Gupta said the surrender of a few top cadres and also following the killing of few hardcore ULFA leader, Hira is left upset.

7 ULFA cadres surrender, major surrender next month

In a major setback for the ULFA. Seven ULFA hardcore activists of the dreaded 9th Battalion have surrendered in two places in lower Assam on Thursday even as a major surrender has yet to come. Four hardcore ULFA militants surrendered before the Army’s Red Horn Division at a function organized at Kalapur based 6th Rajput Battalion office. They are Major Anil Kumar Boro, Tuluk Gogoi, Ajit Brahma and Padum Hazarika . They have further handed over some arms and ammunitions before the army. The army officials said there will be a major surrender next month which will include several top ranked ULFA cadres. Road blockade in Naduwa on Rahmoria issue

Several people have been injured while police shelled tear gas to disperse the protesters who blocked the National Highways 37 at Naduwa in Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district on Thursday. The protesters demand steps to check erosion that poses a serious threat to Rahmoria area of Dibrugarh district. The blockade, which began in the morning disrupted the traffic movement and the district administration rushed police and paramilitary forces to the spot. They shelled tear gases to disperse the protesters.

Gogoi to figure Adivasi agitation in secuirty meeting

NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is attending a meeting of Chief Ministers on Thursday to discuss the state's security scenario. To be chaired by prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the meeting will be attended by Director general pf police RN Mathur and top officials of the home department. The meeting is discussing a slew of measures suggested by the Union home ministry to tackle the internal security situation. Mr Gogoi is all set to to give an account of the measures taken to handle militancy and other law and order situation. The Adivasi agitation over scheduling is likely to figure in the meeting.

Gogoi urges Centre to change in funding pattern

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has urged the Centre to change the pattern of fundings in the Central-government scheme saying that the decrease in the borrowings from small savings could force Assam to rush to bigger market borrowings.Addressing the 54th National Development Council (NDC) on Wednesday in the capital, the Chief Minister stressed fulfilment of the pending demands. Further, he deplored that that his state finds it difficult to provide the State share against various CSS without materially affecting the allocations for other important development sectors like agriculture. AATASU identifys three Badans

The All Assam Tai Ahome Students Union has called for social boycott of those people who attended the meeting with P R Kyindiah on Tuesday in New Delhi.Talking to a private TV channel on Wednesday, AATASU president Pradip Konwar said the two Ahom person were from the Tai Ahom Council which has no relation with the protest for ST status.Calling them Badans of Assam, the students union has further warned the government and the Congress to refrain from trying to disrupt the age old communal of harmony in the state saying it have a serious consequences. AGP again alleges code violation by Congress

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad will approach the Election Commission alleging violation of model code by the ruling party in the panchayat election.Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday party president Brindabon Giswami said they the ruling party leaders and workers are using the government machinery in the electioneering. Earlier the regional party complained it to the poll panel but no action was taken."We will again move the Commission with this allegation.
