An evening of goodwill

”Durgat Kalyan Nyas”,a Kalaigaon based NGO distributed study materials and financial assistance to five very poor students, who had shown excellence in the recent HSLC and HSSLC examinations 2009.A formal ceremony was arranged on the occasion at the premise of the office of the Circle Officer, Kalaigaon on July 25 at 3pm which was presided over by DN Hazarika,Circle Officer, Kalaigaon and Harisinga Revenue Circle.Social worker and secretary of the “Nyas “,Lohit Chandra Nath highlighted the activities of the “Nyas” since 2007. He said that the “Nyas” was formed on May 7 2007 to provide assistance to poor and needy people particularly the students. According to him members of the organization headed by DN Hazarika distributed study materials to nearly 800 student victims of the recent ethnic violence, that had taken serious turn in Darrang and Udalguri district. Noted “Ban Geet” scholar and singer Arabinda Pathak of Guwahati in his speech as the guest of honour thanked the organizers for such a great mission of charity.


The five recipients of the assistance were -Sabita Kalita of Barangabari village; Rameswar Deka of Naharbari village;Himjyoti Tamuli of Udmari village;Rehana Begum of Dakhin Bokrajhar village and Pompi Debnath of Tangla.It needs mention that all the five students had passed their respective board examinations /09 in first division with letter marks in various subjects.The parents of all the students were too poor to support their wards continuing their studies. Tears of gratitude seemed roll down from the eyes of the students as they had spoken a few words in turn. Wild elephant poisoned to death in Udalguri

 The carcass of a twelve years old wild elephant (Makhna)found this morning on the bed of Samrang river near India-Bhutan international border.It has caused concern among nature loving people of the district.Eye witnesses said the elephant could have been poisoned somewhere else the previous night.Frequent deaths of wild elephants have now been a serious concern in the district.Udalguri District Journalists Union and Green Society,Udalguri expressed concern at the incident and request forest department to take appropriate action.

Wild loner kills one more:DFO meets Pramila Rani

One Lawa Majhi (45) was killed by a loner wild elephant at Bormukali near Nonai forest range office in Udalguri district last night at 8 pm.The person was coming home from market while came on the way of two loners.So far 84 people have been killed by wild elephants during last five years in the district against the deaths of 34 wild elephants. 2 tortured to death at Bhutiachang
