India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Four army jawans have sustained serious injury in an ambush by suspected NDFB(S) in Udlaguri district on Sunday.The ambush took place at Majbat where suspected Bodo militants attacked the 36th Assam Rifles jawans at Jawalia centre.They were airlifted to the Tezpur Army Hospital where they have been battling with life. Finally Chief minister Tarun Gogoi broke his silence on the arrest of Akhil Gogoi and five of his associates.Talking to reporters in Dibrugarh on Sunday, Gogoi said that the KMSS president violated law on February 24.He, however, said that law would take its own course and that nobody is above the law.
Guwahati police got remand of Akhil Gogoi for four days 12 hours after the KMSS president was arrested on Sunday.Producing him along with five of his associates in the court of chief judicial magistrate, the police sought ten days remand.Amid tight security, Gogoi and five others were brought to the court where both sides had their arguments.Talking to reporters, SSP AP Tiwary said that they have already produced some evidence to substantiate the complaint against the KMSS leader in connection with the self immolation cases.      
The Tarun Gogoi government has come in for sharp criticism hours after police arrested Akhil Gogoi in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta called the government fascist while BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal and his AIUDF counterpart criticized the government.  
Two top lawyers have come out to provide legal assistance for Akhil Gogoi who was arrested on Sunday wee hours from his own rented house.Bijan Mahanjan and Bhaskar Dev konwar have agreed to conduct the cases on behalf of the KMSS president.He was arrested under Sections 306 and 102(A). These sections are non bailable. But they would formally move the court with a bail petitions.Legal experts told Assam Times that any bail under this two Sections are not possible but in the same breath, there are rare examples of bail even after arrest under these Provisions.
Amid escalating protest against Akhil Gogoi’s arrest, various parties and organizations have alleged police excess on the KMSS leader.Several persons requesting not to be named told Assam Times that the way the KMSS leader was arrested was really shocking. They said, “Gogoi was neither a notorious criminal and nor a fraud. He could have been arrested on Saturday day time. This treatment is totally unjustified.”  
Dispur police have seized the vehicle carrying Pranab Boro to Dispur for self immolation on February 24.The red coloured Nano vehicle belonging to Nagen Pegu in Six Milke areas was seized on Saturday evening.On Sunday morning it was shifted to Panbazar police station were Akhil Gogoi along with 6 other KMSS activists are being kept.  A team of high level police officials is understood to have been grilling Gogoi and his associates in this connection.Towards the evening they would be produced before the court to seek them in police remand.All they were arrested from their residences on Sunday wee hours which runs into a hail of protest.
