India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Trouble awaits Akhil

Akhil Gogoi is likely to land in trouble. Puaram Sarania’s father has filed an FIR against the KMSS president alleging his involvement in the recent self immolation of his son in Dispur.Sarania on Friday went to the Tangla police station and blamed it all on Gogoi for his son’s death after the self-immolation attempt.Notably, Dispur police station alone has two cases pending against Gogoi.

Pillai visit on Mar 4

Former Union home secretary GK Pillai is scheduled to visit BTAD areas on March 4.The schedule was finalized in New Delhi on Friday when the union home ministry officials held talks with several Bodo organizations.ABSU and BPPF have opposed the one member panel of expert set up to study and examine the demands.       

Mob attack on police, scribe

RAJU BARUAH FROM TEZPURA road accident has created no less tension in Tezpur on Friday where an irate mob spared not even policemen and journalist.The road accident took place at 11 in the morning where a women, identified as Rubia Begum, was killed on the spot at Bhitior pora under Mohabhoirab police outpost.Local residents in large number who took to the street turned violent where policemen who rushed to the spot were attacked along with media people.Senior police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.  

AGP-BJP pact uncertain

The AG-BJP pre poll alliance seems to have mired in uncertainty again if Sarbananda Sonowal is to be beleived. AGP top leaders are camping in New Delhi to ensure the pact. But state BJP unit is averse to it.State party unit president Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters in Dibrugarh that the talks for poll alliance has not progressed a lot.According to him, the grassroot level party workers are not interested in forging any tie up with the regional party.

Animal police station in Kaziranga

Stunned by unabated rhino poaching, Dispur is seriously considering a proposal to set up an animal police station in Kaziranga.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Dispur on Friday that the process is on for clearance. He hoped that the police station---first of its kind in the noth east would help the world heritage site save the one horn rhinos.Notably, poachers have killed 8 rhinos for horns during the last two months.   

Action on Akhil Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that action would be taken against Akhil Gogoi in connection with the recent self immolation incident in Dispur.Disclosing this at a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that enquiry is in progress to unearth the truth behind the entire shocking incident.On February 25, a KMSS activist died after self immolation attempt in Dispur in protest against a land patta distribution function in the city.

Dispur plans white paper

Dispur is preparing a white paper on the central assistance during NDA and UPA governments.Disclosing this at a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the white paper will be published before March 15. “It reveal how much Assam got from the Centre during NDA and UPA,” said Gogoi.He further criticized Narendra Modi saying that the BJP prime ministerial candidate is shedding crocodile’s tear during his recent visits to the state.

Violence mars Darrang bandh

A string of violence mars the 12 hour Darrang district bandh call by AAMSU and Muslim Yuva Parishad in protest against the Kolaigaon group clash on Thursday.Three persons have been injured in police firing in Mongoldoi on Friday.Police resorted to firing to disperse a group of people in Naharbari when a section of bandh supporters tried to enforce the bandh.Two critically injured have been rushed to the GMCH for treatment. 

Blockade ends in Karbi Anglong

The 5 day long economic blockade against Nagaland is over.Protesters have withdrawn blockade on the National Highway 36 and 39 after the Nagaland government assured them that they would look into the demands.At least 11 local organizations blocked the roads in the hills district alleging aggression by a section of Nagaland miscreants.
