India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. No place for D voters

The Election Commission has made it clear that they won’t allow any doubtful voters to exercise their franchise.Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Wednesday, Chief Election Commission said that there is no scope for allowing the D voters to vote in Assam in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12, 24.Various political parties have been demanding voting rights for these voters.          

Former ULFA leader in poll fray

AGP goes it alone

AGP finally has decided to go it alone in the Lok Sabha polls.The regional party will contest in all parliamentary constituencies for the polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.Earlier, the party did not finalise the list in view of the possible alliance with BJP.The move stopped as soon as the state unit of the party opposed it.

AAP fields journalist in Jorhat

The Aam Admi Party (AAP) will field Manoram Gogoi from Jorhat constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The outgoing journalist with a satellite television channel has formally joined the party on Wednesday where he disclosed his decision to contest from Jorhat.Gogoi would face BK Handique from Congress and Pradeep Hazarika from AGP in the polls.

Setback for KMSS

In yet another massive setback for KMSS, the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday rejected anticipatory bails for Kamal Medhi and Dharya Konwar wanted in connection with the recent self immolation case in Dispur.The court, however, has granted bail for Amal Bezbaruah whom police have implicated in this case.Guwahati police are intensifying operation to nab the trio after arresting Akhil Gogoi along with five others.       

AGP, BJP unhappy with schedule

AGP and BJP are not happy with the poll schedule announced for Assam by the Election Commission on Wednesday.Both the parties would request the country’s poll panel to reconsider the schedule.AGP and BJP leaders said that Ashokastomi falls on April 7 when the polling will take place in Jorhat, Dibrugah, Kaliabor, Nagaon, Tezpur and Lakhimpur.Similarly, on April 12 polling will take place in Diphu, Karimganj, Silchar two days before the Rongali Bihu.The Opposition parties have alleged that the country’s poll panel could not assess the scenario in the absence of proper interpretation of the state Government.

KMSS activists injured

Several KMSS activists sustained injury in Golaghat when police sprang upon to them for blocking roads demanding immediate release of Akhil Gogoi.The incident took place at Alichiga when police tried to disperse the KMSS activists who blocked a vital road.Police even resorted to blank firing when a section of the allegedly protestors turned violent and damaged a number of vehicles on the road.   

Gogoi unaware of dissidence

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said that he was ready to resign if his legislators want him to quit.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function, he said that nobody has so far told him of their lack of trust.

Resurfacing dissidence

Dissidence seems to have resurfaced in Assam Congress legislature party.Led by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the anti-Gogoi lobby is trying to mount pressure on the high command to remove Tarun Gogoi as Chief Minister apprehending adverse impact in the Lok Sabha polls.The education minister on Wednesday called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi as part of the mission.Dr Sarma is believed to have told the high command that if Gogoi is retained, the party would have to face the music.He is also understood to have submitted a list of 50 legislators against Gogoi.

Assam LS polls from Apr 7

Its official. The state is all set to go to the Lok Sabha polls in three phases.This was disclosed at a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath on Wednesday.He said that the first phase will take place in Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Kaliabor, Jorhat and Lakhimpur.The second phase of polling slated for April 12 comprises Karimganj, Silchar and Diphu. The third and final phase of polling will take place on April 24 in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Dhubri.The counting would take place on May 16.
