Rare honour for Bodo writer

TANGLA: Noted Bodo writer Dr.Rita Baro has fetched no less pride to the people of Assam when she was declared the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in Bodo language. Dr Baro has been named for Sahitya Akademi award for her short-novel,
'Thwisam'.

The novel deals with the story of a  spoiled martyr's son who leaves home after cheating his mother of the ex-gratia compensation amount received from the government for his father's death. Talking to Assam Times, she said, "I'm quite elated over the award. I just like to portray the social happenings specifically the diversion of the youths towards motor- bikes and other high end goods.," said Baro.

She teaches Bodo literature in Tangla College in Udalguri district and is busy working for her next novel. Prior to this she won Mangal Chandri  Brahma Award by Udalguri Bodo Sahitya Sabha. "This is my first recognition for my literary award. It's highly
satisfactory to be honoured by Sahitya Akademy. I never wrote to be a litterateur but writing is my hobby and I derive great satisfaction through it," an excited Baro said. 

Thwisam is her second novel published in 2014. She has penned 3 novels and another is on the verge of publlication. 
Born on August, 28 in 1975, she did her schooling at Tangla Girls' HS school and her graduation in Tangla College holding double masters degree in Assamese and Bodo from Gauhati University and subsequently pursued her Phd degree in the year
2010. She is currently engaged as an assistant professor in Bodo in Tangla College.

AHRC takes suo-moto cognizance of doctor assault

UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.  AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang  to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two  others for not wearing masks. Inferno guts six houses

TANGLA: A  devastating inferno gutted six houses in Pujakhola locality of Tangla town on Tuesday night at about 9 pm. Though the source of the fire has not been ascertained ,fire broke out followed by explosion of  six cylinders razing the properties worth lakhs  to the ground  within minutes. Fawn rescued

UDALGURI: A baby hog deer weighing about six kilogram was rescued by  Mithu Sarkar and Ankit Tanti, two activists of Green Valley Wild Life Protection Society, an NGO of Orongajuli tea estate area today at about 3.00 pm and handed over this to the Udalguri forest department in a healthy condition. While talking to this correspondent, Mithu Sarksr informed that the NGO has been instrumental to rescue young ones of hog deers, wild elephants, tiger cubs in the near past too and till date, it has been able to rescue such animals which came to their notice. 

Cop suspended over doctor assault

UDALGURI: Chirang Police suspended a sub inspector rank police officer serving as Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang district after he allegedly assaulted a doctor and two of his accomplices for not wearing masks on Sunday. Young businessman electrocuted
