Imphal, Dec 16 (NENA): Seven villagers were injured, one of them seriously, after violent clash erupted between two groups at L Tangnaum (Harapthel) village under Sapormeina Police Station over an ongoing land dispute on Saturday.
Chingsubam Rame, 45, got hit by a bullet during the clash that happened around noon, sources said. He was taken to Khurkhul Primary Health Centre but was referred to Raj Medicity for better treatment.
The other six injured in the incident were reported to be villagers of Haraothel. They received injuries in the clash where guns, clubs and other blunt objects were used.
Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel from Kangpokpi and Imphal West rushed to the site and managed to control the violence.
The persistent land dispute between Senjam Chirang and L Tangnuam, also known as Haraothel, started since the Manipur government decided to set up National Sports University (NSU) at Koutruk in Imphal West. Haraothel has strongly opposed the plan.
The NSU site, measuring about 325.60 acre of land, now acquired by Youth Affairs and Sports Department was donated by Senjam Chirang, Senjam Khunou and Koutruk. Haraothel and Koutruk are located at the junction of Senapati and Imphal West.
The sources further said Saturday’s violent clash between two groups from the two neighbouring villages started after Chingsubam Rame, who was injured in the incident, was trying to clear a hillock side to build a pig house with a JCB.
