Illegal settlers evicted in Ledo hamlet
The Tinsukia district administration has evicted eight families of suspected Bangladesh settlers from a remote hamlet in Ledo on Monday a day after a group of former ULFA rebels set on fire a hut belonging to a suspected immigrant.
Led by a magistrate, a team of Margherita police and CRPF jawans reached the Maplang Khamti village in the morning and demolished at least eight huts occupied by the suspected settlers vanished from the spots hours before the eviction drive.
According to authority, these settlers lacked documents to prove citizenship and settlement. "We wont allow anybody without documents to settle here. We have been examining the settlements with utmost care and caution. The moment we found it unconvincing we evicted these people," said an officer.
Talking to Assam Times, a local resident said " We have been complaining before the authorities for the last many months. But the authority has been delaying eviction citing verification of documents. A day after the former ULFA rebels stepped up the drive by setting on fire a hut, thr administration evicted these settlers," said a local resident.
A group of former ULFA rebels led by Jiten Dutta set afire a hut on Sunday where seven former rebels were detained. When protested with a road blockade, the police freed six former rebels and arrested one of them who set on fire the hut.
