GOC 3 Corps calls on Manipur Chief Minister

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan, AVSM, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding 3 Corps, arrived in the state on a two-day visit from 29 September 28-29. 

The very senior army commander is responsible for ensuring security of the Indian borders as well as for countering insurgency in the south-eastern states of the North East India, IGAR (S) said in a statement.   

The Army General, accompanied by the Head of Assam Rifles in Manipur -General Virender Singh, called on Chief Minister N Biren Singh yesterday evening. 

General Chauhan also conveyed his warm greetings and good wishes to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Durga Puja. 

During the meeting the General Officer discussed the security and law and order situation in the state with the Chief Minister and assured him of the Army’s commitment to working towards bringing lasting peace in the region. 

General Virender Singh, while conveying the unstinted support of his forces for ensuring the well being of the state, emphasized on the fact that a vast majority of the Assam Rifles are from in and around Manipur. 

Being sons of the soil themselves, they are passionately contributing towards advancement of the state in their own sphere of work, besides assisting the civil administration in maintaining peace, they are mainly focussed on empowering the children, women and youth of the state to attain financial sustainability and a secure future, he said. 

The Assam Rifles is also making a concerted effort towards harnessing the immense talent available in the state in an array of different sporting activities and in the field of art and literature. 

This is being done by providing them with guidance, counselling, training and suitable platforms to showcase their talent. 

The close coordination and interaction between the state government and security forces was highlighted and well appreciated by both the Chief Minister and the Military General, the statement said.

More funds for Manipur highways

Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways PonRadhakrishnan here on Saturday announced that based on demand of the Manipur government for sanction of work under Central Road Fund (CRF), additional Rs 25 crore will be considered in addition to available ceiling of Rs 26 crore during 2017-18. 3 gang members held with arms and ammunition

Three illicit drug and arms smugglers who were also involved in hijacking of vehicles were arrested by police and seized weapons, including one Chinese hand grenade, from their possession. Youth commits suicide

A 24-year-old youth reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside a hotel room at Babupara on Wednesday. Reports said Konsam Chandrakriti, son of late K Chandrakanta Singh of Ramnagar Tuko of Silchar within Assam’s Cachar district, was found dead inside Hotel Star this morning. He hanged himself with a khudei (clothe) inside his hotel room. Some employees of the hotel informed the police after he did not give any response when they called him from outside the room. The door of the room was found closed from inside. A team of Jiri police arrived there and broke the door open when he was found hanging from the ceiling. The police have started investigation into the death.

3 girls from Manipur rescued in Karnataka

In a suspected case of human trafficking, three young girls from Manipur, who were taken to Karnataka on pretext of providing jobs, were rescued at Shimoga district of Karnataka. The trio were rescued during a joint operation carried out by Karnataka police, Imphal West police and Women Helpline ‘181,’ as per a report. It said the girls will be handed over to their parents with the help of the Social Welfare Department. Women in distress have been appealed to use any time the toll free telephone number 181 of Women Helpline ‘181’ for help. The report also appealed to all leaders, apex bodies, village and religious leaders and media to help fight human trafficking in the state.  

One dies in Imphal East, swine flu suspected

One suspected swine flu (H1N1) death has been reported at a private hospital here on Monday. The patient, hailing from Imphal East, suffered from symptoms similar to that of pandemic swine flu, officials said. The patient died at Rajmedicity, North AOC around 9 am. The suspected deadly swine flu patient admitted to the hospital on July 21. Officials said the patient had been put on ventilator support in the isolation ward of the hospital where his condition deteriorated. Girl shot dead by boyfriend

A family is mourning after an 18-year-old girl was shot to death allegedly by her “boyfriend” at Moreh town bordering Myanmar early on Sunday. Mild tremor rocks Manipur

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Manipur on Sunday triggering the fear of the 2015 like one which caused huge damage to the northeastern state. The earthquake, which originated in Ukhrul district struck the state at around 1.36 AM forced many people to wake up and the panic stricken people in the high rise buildings started coming down to the open space. There is, however, no report of any casuslty or loss of property.

Assam Rifles re-unites ‘misguided youth’ with his family

Exhibiting exemplary compassion and empathy, the soldiers of 19 Assam Rifles of 28 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) reunited a “misguided youth” who was recruited into UNLF, with his family.
