3 gang members held with arms and ammunition

Three illicit drug and arms smugglers who were also involved in hijacking of vehicles were arrested by police and seized weapons, including one Chinese hand grenade, from their possession.

The three persons disclosed that they were involved in trafficking of illicit drugs and arms and ammunition and also in hijacking vehicles with other associates, according to police.

A commando team of Thoubal district police under the overall supervision of Superintendent of Police K Meghachandra Singh yesterday conducted intensive patrolling, frisking and checking in several parts of Thoubal district, as part of security measures put in place in the run up to Independence Day celebration, police said on Friday.

The police team saw an unknown person coming in a suspicious manner towards a bridge near Sangaiyumpham Nungphou bazaar around 7:30 pm. On seeing the cops, the man fled the spot prompting the cops to chase him. He was then detained for verification and checking.

One Chinese hand grenade and one .32 ammunition were found in his possession, which were later seized.

He identified himself as Md Alam Khan,34, son of late Najiruddin of Sangaiyumpham Puleipokpi Part-I, an active member of a gang of illicit drug and arms smugglers.

In the follow up action, at the instance of Md Alam, the police arrested one of his associates identified as Md Akbar @ Ithem, 32, son of late Manao of Lamding Cherapur Mathak Leikai at 8.05 pm along with one 9 mm pistol and one magazine.

In the further follow up action, police arrested one associate of the duo identified as Md Sidik Ali, 42, son of Md Ibotombi of Sangaiyumpham Yangbi Leikai at 8.50 pm from his residence.
