Flood: Barpeta unchanged

Flood situation remains unchanged in Barpeta district on Sunday where over 15,000 people have been reeling under the surging waters.

The worst-hit district has 13,000 marooned people to be followed by Goalpara where more than 8,000 people have been remaining homeless.

Uneasy calm in BTAD

The Chirang district administration has relaxed curfew from 10 in the morning. 9 more killed in BTAD bloodbath

There seems to be no respite from the bloodbath in the BTAD areas. Nine more killed in BTAD; toll 20

BTAD situation seems to have gone from bad to worse if a fresh orgy of violence is any indication.The worst-hit district is Baska where militants have killed at least nine more people forcing the authority to clamp curfew in the BTAD district.Local residents claimed to have recovered nine more bodies from a village in Nayanpur after the militants set on fire at least 40 houses of a tiny hamlet.Five bodies were identified as Somesh Ali, Hajera Bibi, Rahima Khatun and Aayesha Khatum. Rotten war of words

War of words among the political leaders seems to have escalating on every passing day in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.Barpeta BJP candidate Chandra Mohan Patowary on Tuesday hit back at Nilomoni Sen Deka saying the agriculture minister has been running a rotten department.Addressing a poll rally in Bhawanipur on Tuesday, the former AGP president said that Deka was in the helm of affairs of a rotten department like agriculture and that’s why, he sees everything rotten.His reaction came a day after Deka called Patowary a rotten banana.  

Media keeps dissidence alive: CM

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday said that dissidence is surviving in media only and that there is no crippling dissidence within the ruling party.    Talking to reporters in Barpeta after holding a poll rally, Gogoi said that the party in rank and file is gearing up for the polls.According to him, Congress will be able to put up a good show in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Gogoi said called Narendra Modi a cuckoo-like season bird. He further said that BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal would face defeat at the hands of Ranee Narah.

Cattle thieves caught

A section of cow thieves has been unleashing terror in Barpeta district these days.Cow theft has been a normal case in Bajali and Bhawanipur areas in the lower Assam district. Police on Wednesday caught four such thieves and seized 7 cows from their possession.The thieves and cows were picked up from a Bolero pick up van bearing No AS-01-DC-0992 in Bhawanipur.An irate mob caught the thieves and assaulted them along with their relatives before handing over to police.Police resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Ex-MLA dies

Veteran political leader Sarbananda Choudhury is no more. The former Bajali MLA died at his residence on Wednesday after prolonged illness. A pall of gloom descended at the premature death of the politician.Various political parties, organizations and individuals paid their last respect to Chaudury and conveyed their deep sympathies to the bereaved family members.
