Uneasy calm in BTAD

The overall situation in BTAD areas remained normal. There is no report of any untoward incident during the last 48 hours.

Baksa, Chirang and Kokrajhar district administration have relaxed curfew from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

Over 1500 people in Narayanguri have been  sheltering at a few camps set up by the authorities heavily guarded by the security forces.

Army, police and para military forces are on round the clock patrolling in the streets in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa to thwart any move of the miscreants who have killed at least 37 people in a string of attacks on minority people.

Top ranked civil and police officials along with a ministers have been closely monitoring the situation in the BTAD areas.

Farmer couple commit suicide

In yet another bizarre incident that sends shockwaves across the state, a farmer couple committed suicide in Barpeta district after poisoning their 2 children on Sunday. The incident took place in the Sarthebari area where caught in grim poverty the couple poisoned to death their children and then hanged themselves in the evening. Local residents blamed poverty which forced them to take this extreme course of action. The incident took place a month after a poor farmer took the same course of action when flood waves ravaged his crops.    

Veteran author passes away

Veteran author and educationist Jiban Krishna Patra passed away leaving a pall of gloom in the entire Barpeta district on Tuesday. The end came in the morning at a local hospital where he was undergoing treatment. He was 80. Patra, who came to Assam in the Sixtieth authored many books when he was working as a professor of a college.Various parties, organizations and individuals have condoled the death of the veteran author and paid their last respect to Patra.

School students dead in mishap

Two minor school students died at a remote area of an Indian state of Assam when a mini bus in which they went to school plunged it a deep gorge while crossing on a narrow wooden bridge on Thursday.According to the family members, the driver was in inebriated condition as he was  carrying the vehicle to the morning shift school where the incident took place halfway.Two bodies were fished out by the local residents while the injured others have been shifted to a local health centre for treatment. State disaster response force launched a vigorous search operation on the local rivulet to be completed an hour. Mob violence erupted on the spot who recovered the ill fated vehicle...

Shocked farmer commits suicide

In a bizarre incident, fist of its kind in the state, a poor farmer committed suicide after flood waves repeatedly damaged his crops in Barpeta district on Sunday.The tragic incident took place at Bhawanipur area where farmer Taraf Ali committed suicide at his own house in the morning. Local residents told Assam Times that flood waters have completely ravaged his crops forcing him to take this extreme step leaving five children in the lurch. “He had his crops five months back to be washed away. Lightening: 3 injured shifted to GMCH

Three persons who sustained serious injury in Barpeta lightening on Saturday are battling for life at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.At least fifteen others have been undergoing treatment at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital who are out of danger. The boat carrying more than 50 people was caught in a storm in the middle of the river Beki where the lightening struck on it leaving seven people died on the spot.

Altogether seven people including women and children died in a lightening incident in Barpeta sending shockwaves across the state on Saturday.Amid thunder squall the lightening took place on a boat carrying at least 50 people on the river Beki in the evening where at least 21 others sustained injury.The injured are battling for life at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed deep shock at the lightening incident and announced Rs 4 lakh each to the family members of those killed in the incident.

Rail blockade in Sorbhog

Normal train services remains disrupted for several hours in the morning on Monday following the rail blockade in Barpeta demanding a sub division. Led by BJP MLA from Sorbhog Ranjit Das, hundreds of people blocked the rails in Sorbhog in the morning demanding Sorbhog a sub division.
