Govt to set up Farmers’ Development Corporation

Assam government is mulling setting up a Farmers’ Development Corporation and Rs 1,000 crore will be allocated for taking up various farmers’ oriented schemes.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said during an interactive programme with 100 farmers from different parts of the state on Friday.

Gogoi said that his government has all along been giving emphasis on the agriculture sector and has taken up a slew of schemes aimed at raising the income of the farmers.

“Ours is an agrarian economy and the development of the state hinges on agriculture and allied sectors. That is why our government has accorded top priority to the agriculture sector and has taken up a slew of schemes towards this end,” he added.

The chief minister while declaring 2015 as ‘Year of Agriculture’ said the government has put emphasis on farm mechanisation and the farmers have to adopt modern farming to raise the agriculture production, thus boosting their income.

Gogoi said the government would provide assistance to farmers who have done exceedingly well in their respective fields and asked the Agriculture Department to draw a list of 100 selected farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, minister for agriculture, Rakibul Hussain, said the thrust of his department is to shift from single to multiple cropping in a year to augment the income of the farmers. Hussain said his department has already initiated the process for timely distribution of potato seeds from October this year.

Listing out the achievements on the agriculture front, Hussain said the State has attained self-sufficiency in rice production in 2010 and has done well in production of pulses.

The minister said the concept of an interactive programme with the Chief Minister is a unique one aimed at giving the farmers the recognition they richly deserve as well as giving them the opportunity to share the problems afflicting them.

Later, the chief minister released a crop calendar wherein vital inputs are being provided as to what crops must be sowed throughout the year. Gogoi also had light refreshments with the farmers and exchanged pleasantries with them. The farmers also presented vegetables sowed in their fields to the Chief Minister.

Curtain raiser event by Cotton College hostel

Negotiations open for those who shun violence: Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the government is willing to talk with the protestors if they shun the path of violence.In a statement on Sunday, Gogoi said the doors for negotiations are always open for those who eschew violence and come forward for talks. “Violence will not solve any problems. It will rather compound matters. Only through non-violent and democratic, peaceful means all problems can be resolved amicably across the table. The doors for negotiations are always open for those who abjure violence".The Chief Minister said that the government would not tolerate violent protests in any manner. “No one can be allowed to take law unto their hands”. he cautioned.

Section 144 promulgated in Kamrup (M)

The Additional District Magistrate of Kamrup (Metro) has promulgated Section 144 for safety, security and maintenance of public peace and tranquillity. In view of the above, riding of more than one person or pillion riding on any two wheeled vehicles for 24 hours within the entire district of Kamrup (M) has been prohibited.However, there are few exceptions like – persons above the age of 60, ailing persons travelling to and fro from any hospital, persons of police and armed forces in uniform, physically handicapped and school children in uniform.This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further order.

Sensitization programme on witch hunting for police personnel

The Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) organised a state level sensitization programme for police personnel seeking for intervention and prevention of witch hunting in affected areas of Assam on Friday.Police personnel from all districts especially those from largely affected areas such as Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang etc. attended the programme held at Guwahati Circuit House.In his presentation Addl. Ban on strikes in Assam

Assam government has prohibited strikes in the state by Officers, Workmen, Contract Labour, Tanker, Driver and also Khalasis involved in the service in the Oil or Gas Sector for a further period of 6 (six) months from the date of issue of the notification until further orders.It may be noted that as per provisions of item (xii) of clause (b) of sub-section (i) of section 2 of Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1980, strikers involved with any service in any Oil field or Refinery of any establishment or undertaking dealing with the production, supply or distribution of Petroleum and Petroleum products including natural gas will fall under the purview of the ban.

Restriction on movement of people/ vehicles

In view of the General Elections to the National Council in Bhutan, the international border gates along Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Chirang districts would be sealed and movement of people/ vehicles through the gates restricted from 6 pm on July 12, 2013 to 6 pm on July 13, 2013.This was informed in a letter addressed to the Principal Secretary, Home and Political Department, Govt of Assam from the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan.
