Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

Final NRC draft on June 30: SC

NEW DELHI: The process to update NRC in Assam will be further expedited as the Supreme Court has asked the authority to publish the final draft on June 30.A division bench of the country’s top court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Narimon on Tuesday said that the second draft should be published on May 31. CPM puts Pallab in Charilam bypoll

PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: The ruling CPM in Tripura has fielded Pallab Debverma in Charilam by polls slated for mid March. The party announced the name on Monday in the place of Ramendra Debverma who died of cardiac ailment on February 12 forcing the Election Commission to countermand the polling till mid March. Rape accused lynched in Arunachal

ITANAGAR:An irate mob in Arunachal Pradesh lynched two people from Assam on Monday a week after they allegedly gangraped and killed a five year old girl. Poll candidate among 5 killed in GNLA attack

SHILLONG:Five people including a poll candidate in Meghalaya died in a powerful explosion in the poll bound north eastern state on Sunday. According to information, suspected GNLA rebels exploded the bomb at Samanda at 7.30 in the evening where NCP candidate from Williamnagar Jonathone N Sangma along with two security guards and three others died on the spot. Sangma, was believed to have received threat from the rebel outfit as he filed nomination papers. Even the rebel warned the voters' of dire consequences if Sangma was voted to power.
