A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.
The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.
The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. Thousands of people hit the streets in BTAD areas on Monday in protest against the orgy of violence carried out by NDFB-S that killed 8 people within 24 hours. Led by Bodoland Peoples’ Front, the protesters asked the militants to stop attack on innocent people and to allow the peace prevail in BTAD areas. Transport minister Chandan Brahma also participated in the procession along with other BPF leaders.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is expected to seek more central assistance for the state when he will attend the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday. To be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his official residence at 11 in the morning, Gogoi is likely to raise the plight of a number of infrascture projects in the state.Dr Singh is expected to review the major infrascture projects in the entire region. Several organizations have enforced 24 hour bandhs in the BTAD areas on Monday in protest against NDFB’s killing spree where 8 people died and over 10 have injured in four different incidents of attack on innocent people.Life remained paralyzed in the entire BTAD areas following the 24 hour bandhs which began at 6 in the morning on Monday. shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed while the vehicles of security forces were seen plying on the roads.
Amrit Cement has tendered unconditional apology in the face of mounting protest of its recent diktat over the Assamese language in its official functionings.In a statement, the cement company regretted the earlier notification which oozed protest across the state.
The Asom Sahitya Sabha officials came out to the streets on Sunday in protest against the non implementation of the Assam Language Act----making it mandatory for the government to use Assamese language in the official functionings.The protesters removed some English and Hindi hoardings and banners on the streets. A section of Sahitya Sabha officials blackened the hoardings and banners.A section of the Sabha officials told assamtimes that they would intensify the agitation in the run up to the special session in the city. A full scale offensive begins in BTAD areas against NDFB-S after the Bodo militant outfit killed 8 persons in three different attacks.
The entire strategy was chalked at the unified command meeting in Dispur on Sunday.
On the other hand, DGP Khagen Sarma has instructed top police officials in BTAD to strictly deal with the elements. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi who is camping in New Delhi is assessing the situation on telephonic conversation with Khagen Sarma.
AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Sunday question Tarun Gogoi’s moral rights to continue as chief minister in view of his failure to rein in the militant outfits. Mahanta blamed it all on the chief minister saying that these orgy of uneasy incidents suggest Gogoi failure on the law and order front.
NDFB-S continues to spread terror tentacles in BTAD areas forcing the authorities to launch combing operations against the Bodo militant outfit. The anti-talk faction of the outfit shot dead one more person in Mongoljhar. With this the toll in the militant attack during the last 30 hours has reached 8.
