CM’s effigy burnt at Namrup

Several organizations joined the All Assam Students’ Union and the Namrup Tai Ahom Students’ Union today and burned the effigy of Assam CM Tarun Gogoi protesting Naga aggression at Uriam Ghat. About 500 school and college students along with the commoners of Namrup joined the protest. The effigy was burnt near the Namrup Police Station. Protestors dared the CM and the police administration in their slogans.

Candidates from the 120 Naharkatia Legislative Assembly Constituency segment in favour of their candidates include Pranati Phukan (Cong-I), Pradip Buragohain (BJP), Sasa Kamal Handique (CPM), Noran Sonowal (AGP), Karthik Tanti (NCP), Tirtha Gogoi (TMC) submitted their nomination in the District election offices for the ensuring Assembly polls. A total of 1,16,872 voters will exercise their franchise in 171 polling stations in this LAC. However, some Congress-I workers have strongly protested against the candidature of Pranati Phukan who has been representing this LAC since 1996 and defeating her nearest rivals in the last three Assembly elections consecutively.
The lone fertilizer industry of the entire Northeast, the Brahmaputra Vally Fertilizer Co-operation Ltd (BVFCL) at Namrup has been in the doldrums. So a general apathy by the government in revamping BVFCL has caused the AASU to take up agitation. Namrup district AASU members held mass rally near BVFCL Namrup on March 1 demanding modernization of the Namrup II and III manufacturing plants and setting up of a fourth plant. Poor and inadequate ATM service has caused a lot of miseries to bank customers in Namrup. Presently there are only two ATM booths here one by SBI and the another by UCO bank. Another bank UBI does not have their own ATM despite having a sizable numbers of account holders issued ATM cards. The UCO bank ATM is the most poorly run; remaining out of order or closed most of the time. Similarly , the SBI ATM remains without cash or out of order most of the time.
Preliminary work on elephant census has begun on February 20 at Jeypore Resurve Forest, which area is surrounded by Namsung, Buridehing and Dilli River. A free yoga camp was held on February 21 at Chowkidinghee with a huge gathering in the early morning.
