Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Rapid deforestation seems to have put the wild animals in danger. Local residents in Guwahati caught a deer from the human habitaton Wednesday. The deer was spotted in Noonmati area by a section of local residents after it sneaked into the human habitat in the morning. Kokrajhar bandh total

Normal life came to a grinding halt in Kokrajhar following the day long bandh call on Wednesday in protest against the attack on a local trader on Tuesday night.Roads wore deserted look. Schools and colleges, shops and markets, offices and banks remained closed under the impact of the baandh.Suspected KLO militants gunned down a local from a point blank range in Kokrajhar on Tuesday evening on his way back to his home. The businessman was killed on the spot.

APCC holds crucial meet

Assam Congress Committee is holding its executive body meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday to discuss the crucial issues three months ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.Presided over by APCC president Bhuubneswar Kalita, AICC general secretary Dr CP Joshi is attending the meeting along with APCC leader Avinash Pandey and chief minister Tarun Gogoi.Dissidence activities are unlikely to figure in the meeting. On Tuesday evening Dr Joshi, Pandey and top APCC leaders held a crucial meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence where poll candidates were believed have discussed.

ULFAman killed in encounter

A hardcore ULFAman died in an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district on Wednesday. The encounter took place along the Assam-Meghalaya border in the wee hours.According to information, security forces launched a combing operation acting on a tip off that a group of hardcore ULFAmen was hiding in the area. The man died on the spot. The encounter took place day after police arrested an ULFA-linkman.

Tea estate manager freed

Suspected NDFB-S have freed a tea garden manager 9 days after he was kidnapped from his house in Sonitpur district.Identified as Bharat Singh Rathorh, the Pabhoi Tea Estate manager in Tinisuti area in Bisswanath Chaliali was released along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Tuesday night.Hours after the release, he reached the local police station seeking help to leave for the tea garden on Wednesday. He was kidnapped by a group of 10 armed youths at gunpoint on January 16 from his own residence.

Trader shot dead

Murder and mayhem refuses to die down in Kokrajhar even amid a full scale operation against the insurgents in BTAD areas. Suspected KLO militants shot dead a businessman in Kokrajhar on Tuesday. The incident took place in the heart of the town at around 8 in the evening. Armed miscreants sprayed several rounds of bullets on a shop keeper on his way back to his home. The businessman was killed on the spot. Policemen rushed to the spot. But by then, the militants managed to escape. This is the fifth cases of death in BTAD areas within this week.

Operation against ULFA, NDFB, KLO

Security forces are spreading tentacles against ULFA(I), NDFB-S and KLO apprehending subversive activities in the run up to the Republic Day celebrations.During his visit to Chirang district on Tuesday, DGP Khagen Sarma said that the combing operations have been intensified against the militant outfits operating in the state.Sarma held talks with top ranked police officials from Kokrajhar and Chirang district to take stock of the BTAD law and order situation where NDFB-S killed 8 innocent people in four different attacks within a period of 24 hours.The Centre has agreed to rush additional security forces to contain the law and order situation in BTAD.

APCC forms assessment panel

Assam Congress poll panel on Tuesday set up a special committee to assess the political situation in the Lok Sabha seats.Presided over by APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita in presence of chief minister Tarun Gogoi and AICC observers Dr CP Joshi and Avinash Pandey, the meeting asked Pranati Phukan to assess the Jorhat and Nagaon seat, Sarat Borkotoky in Barpeta and Dr Hemoprabha Saikia in Lakhimpur. The committee members would leave for the constituencies on January 22 and 23.They would submit their findings on January 27 to help the screening body shortlist panels of candidates against each of the 14 seats.
