Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Rapist held in Lakhimpur

Yet another incident of rape seems to have brought bad name for Lakhimpur.The incident took place in Boginadi again where the victim is a girl of Eighth standard. The 50 year old accused perpetrator is in police custody after he raped the minor girl in the absence of her parents on Sunday.Identified as Toseshwar Hazarika, the accused was caught by the local residents and was beaten up before being handed over to police. Investigation is going on.On the other hand, thousands of people in the entire area staged dharna in front of the Boginadi police station demanding strict action against the perpetrator.

Bombing attempt unearthed

Dispur police have arrested a dreaded ULFA militant who was camping in the city to strike in the run up to the Republic Day celebrations. A detonator was also found from his possession. Identified as Raju Haloi, the ULFA militant have made some sensational revelations of his outfit’s subversive attempts after he was caught from Rukmininagar area near the capital on Tuesday wee hours. Police have picked up an ULFA linkman from Goalpara acting on his confessional statement.

Militants held from Byrnnihat

Amid intensified combing operation against NDFB-S, Assam and Meghalaya police held ten militants and linkmen from Meghalaya on Tuesday. They were picked up during an operation from Byrnihat in the neighbouring state in the wee hours. They are suspected to be NDFB-S militants and linkmen. Police interrogation is going on.

APCC meets to screen candidates

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee gears up for the Lok Sabha polls. Its poll panel will meet on Tuesday to shortlist the candidates for the general election. To be attended by AICC observer Dr CP Joshi along with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar kalita, the meeting will take place in the evening.The crucial meeting is expected to prepare panels of candidates out of 138 aspirants for the entire 14 Lok Sabha seats. The panels would be sent to the AICC screening body for final seal of approval from the party high command.

Bogibeel bridge by 2016

The Centre is committed to complete the Bogibeel Rail cum road bridge across the Brahmaputra to be completed by 2016. Disclosing this, the centre told the north east chief minietrs conference on Monday in New Delhi that works are in progress to meet the deadline.
