Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has sought Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre to tide over the grim flood situation where at least 40 people lost their lives during the last 5 days. In a letter to prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, Gogoi said that the huge extent of damage of the flood fury has forced him to pin hopes on this huge amount. The flood waters start receding trend in the worst hit areas of Goalpara and Kamrup Districts. The waterlevels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries across the state are also receding marginally.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh will be on a stock taking visit to Assam next week. The Centre is not looking after Assam and J&K differently. This was what Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju told reporters in Lakhimpur on Thursday.Hours after chief minister alleged that the Centre took up Assam and J&K flood differently, Rijiju who hails from Arunachal Pradesh said that Centre is helping the state get out of the blues.He further said that the Assam government has experience of handling the situation from its past experience and that flood is new problem in J&K where the government has hardly any experience.   
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi accused the Centre of not taking up flood situation seriously. Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Thursday, Gogoi alleged that the Centre was looking after Assam and Jammu and Kashmir differently. He said that Jammu and Kashmir received special treatment from the Centre in the time of the recent flood. Flood is not perennial problem in J&K like Assam. But the Centre’s treatment is different.

Identified as Mohan Satnami and Gonesh Pator, the duo are being charged with killing Mintu after hiring his vehicle on September 19. The flash flood has forced the Northeast Frontier Railway to cancel eight trains. It has further diverted seven others on Thursday. Dhaka is waiting for early settlement of the land deal with New Delhi. This was what Bangladesh high commissioner in India Tariq A. Karim said in Guwahati. In his interaction at a FICCI function in the city on Wednesday, he said that said ratification of the India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement is the only way to help both the countries solve the problem of illegal migration. He further said it would help India and Bangladesh boost bilateral ties. Karim said ratification of the land boundary agreement is in India’s own interest.
The Centre has assured the Assam government of all help to deal with the flood fury that claimed 30 people during the last four days.In his telephonic conversation with chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday, Union home minister Rajnath Singh said that the Centre would extend all possible assistance to the state for rescue and relief of flood-affected areas.Rescue and relief teams operations are underway at Boko, Goalpara, Guwahati, Sonitpur, North Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dhemaji.
The flood toll has gone up to 30 with 14 more bodies were recovered from Goalpara and Kamrup(Rural) districts on Wednesday.NDFR and SDRF fished out 6 bodies from Bolbola and Krishnai areas of Goalpara. Eight other bodies were recovered from Kamrup(Rural) district. Four others are still missing. Goalpara district administration has set up 94 relief camps to accommodate one lakh people.Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka and Forest Minister Rakibul Hussain have been camping in the district and to coordinate the relief and rescue operations.
 The Assam government has ex-gratia of Rs 3.5 lakh to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the current floods.The formal announcement was made on Wednesday after the flood toll went up to 30 from 14. In Goalpara district alone altogether 14 bodies were fished out.In Kamrup (Rural)ten bodies were found apart from four other remaining traceless. Rescue operations are on and the situation was improving gradually on Wednesday.Traffic along NH 37 has resumed but they were moving very slowly as several parts of it are still submerged.
