Dhaka is waiting for early settlement of the land deal with New Delhi. This was what Bangladesh high commissioner in India Tariq A. Karim said in Guwahati. In his interaction at a FICCI function in the city on Wednesday, he said that said ratification of the India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement is the only way to help both the countries solve the problem of illegal migration. He further said it would help India and Bangladesh boost bilateral ties. Karim said ratification of the land boundary agreement is in India’s own interest.
Poll related violence refuses to die down. Two more people were killed in police firing in Dhubri district on Friday. The incident took place during poll counting in Hathsinghmari area of the South Salamara sub division when a group of men allegedly tried to storm into a counting centre and destroy ballot boxes for the elections.
Five other people were also injured in the firing by Assam Police and paramilitary forces.
It comes three days after 20 people were killed in police firing in Goalpara district where protests by the Rabha Hajong tribe during Tuesday's village council elections triggered violence.
The police said it has had to open fire because members of the Rabha Hajong tribe were burning down villages and attacking government officials. It took the death toll to 23.
The United Liberation Front of Asom on Monday makes it plain and simple that it is averse to hold any talk with the givernment in the absence of Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah who is still at large. This was disclosed by the jailed publicity secretary of the rebel outfit Mithinga Daimary who was brought to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital for health check up.
