83% polling in Dhupdhara

The polling in Dhupdhara area of Goalpara district under Guwahati parliamentary constituency passed off peacefully except a few incidents of malfunctioning of EVMs in three poll centres. The brisk polling was witnessed in the morning today at several polling stations at Dhupdhara and its outskirts. The casting was started as usual but the defect was witnessed in the EVM before start of the polling in one of the centre at Dhupdhara High School. Polling in Kothakuthi centre and Ambari ME School was also disrupted due to the defect found in EVMs. But immediate replacement helped to complete the polling peacefully.

According to the official sources, 83.14 per cent polling was reported in Dhupdhara sector which included 11 polling centres numbering from 187 to 19.

17 cows killed in train mishap

Alt least 17 cows including calves were killed when a passenger train ran over them near Dhanubhanga village, about 10 km from Dhupdhara in Goalpara district, on Sunday afternoon. The tragic incident occurred on the Guwahati Bongaigaon railway track in Dhanubhanga-Letekupara area. The animals, after grazing at the nearby agriculture filed, were crossing the rail track to return home when the incident happened, local sources said. "We are poor people. The cows were our livelihood sources," one of the farmers and owner of the killed cows said.

NDFB (S) Area Commander nabbed at Dudhnoi

Based on tip-off, Indian Army apprehended the area commander of the 14th battalion of the banned outfit NDFB (S) at Balasara village under Dudhnoi police station in Goalpara district last night. The area commander has been identified as Pradip Brahma of Kokrajhar district and later he was handed over to Dudhnoi police. The militant was hiding in the area with his girl friend for the last one week in Balasara village before he was nabbed, police said. 12 live ammunitions of M16 rifle, wireless set and detonator wires were recovered from the militant.

Goalpara geared up for polls

The Goalpara district administration has geared up for smooth conduct of the ensuing Lok Sabha poll to be held in the third phase in the state on April 24 for the two Lok Sabha segments, Dhubri and Guwahati in the district. Eid-ul-Azha Celebrated at Dhupdhara

Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated on Wednesday with religious fervour and gaiety across Goalpara district along with the rest of the state. The day began with Muslims, attired in their best, offering Eid prayers at Eidgahs and mosques in various places in the district. After the prayers, Muslims sacrificed goats and other 'halal' animals commemorating the great sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and urged Muslims to follow his teachings and the Holy Quran. The meat of the sacrificed animals is distributed among neighbours, relatives and the poor.
