Tarun Gogoi dead

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications.

His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Flood waters refuse to recede in Assam in view of the incessant rains that lashed the state during the last couple of days rendering almost two lakh people. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level where the surging waters have submerged more and more areas in Lakhimpur, Jorhar, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Kamrup, Sonitpur district forcing the people to take shelter in the highland areas. Monsoon misery in Barpeta

A rising water level of the mighty river Bramhaputra wreaked no ness havoc in Barpeta in the form of flood where Bhogerpar and its adjoining areas have come under the surging waters. These areas with a considerable population have been remaining under water for the last 5 days. The situation is taking a grim turn as the water level refuses to recede. Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) activists in different parts of Assam blocked rails on Friday opposing the Centre’s move to auction 12 marginal oilfields disrupting normal train services.With banners and festoons hundreds of protesters blocked the rails in Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Margherita, Digboi, Jorhat and Golaghat raising slogans asking the Centre not to proceed with the deal.The protesters further asked the Centre to roll back the move within 24 hours.

2 dead in Sonapur landslide

Landslide again wreaks havoc in Assam where two persons lost their lives in the outskirt of Guwahati on Thursday. The incident took place early in the morning in 11th Mile area near Sonapur in the wee hours sending shockwaves in the entire area. The shocking incident struck when a guard wall collapsed on the house where Bishal Sharma and his daughter Nanu succumbed to their injuries.
