GU Vice Chancellor inaugurated India-Taiwan Global Bamboo webinar

An International Webinar Series -2 on the Theme: "Bamboo: a potential resource for the uplifting rural economy in post-COVID pandemic situation in Northeast Inda” was held on 10th July 2020 organised by “2020 INDIA TAIWAN GLOBAL BAMBOO TECH FORUM” in association with Gauhati University, Assam and Japan Bamboo Society as Knowledge partners. This was an initiative of SABF and National Cheng Chung University, Taiwan to expand bamboo cooperation and develop the bamboo industry towards achieving the SDG of United nations globally. The Webinar was started with the welcome speech by Dr. Long-Chuan Lu, Professor, Marketing and Director, Marketing Strategy and Innovation Research Centre, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan and Mr. Kamesh Salam, Founder, World Bamboo Day and Executive Director, South Asia Bamboo Foundation. he Webinar was inaugurated by Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University where he emphasized on sustainable use of bamboo resources in post-COVID situation. Dr. Shibata SHOZO, Chief Director of Japan Bamboo Society, Professor, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Agriculture; Kyoto University, Japan delivered the keynote speech. Among the key panellists, Dr. Bhaben Tanti, Professor, Department of Botany and Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Gauhati University introduced the webinar and highlighted the potentiality of bamboo resources in the “Atmanirbhar Rojgar Abhyan”, Govt. of India to generate employment for youth through entrepreneurship and industrial associations.

Prof. Alak Kumar Buragohain, Former Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University and Chairperson-Academics, Royal Global University highlighted in details regarding the importance of bamboo mapping and value addition in post COVID situation in NE India. The deliberations made by other key panellists were Prof. Amar Yumnam, Development and Institutional Economist, Manipur University; Mr. STS Lepcha (Retd. IFS), Former PCCF and presently Member of the National Bamboo Mission, Govt. of India; Mr. Parikshit Borkotoky, Managing Director, Kraftinn Home Décor India Pvt Ltd. highlighted different issues related to bamboo based trade and industries.

Mr. Kamesh Salam, Chairman of the Webinar highlighted in details about the bamboo status in Japan, Taiwan, Chaina, Thailand and India and the possible opportunity in Northeast India. Finally, the panellist have concluded with a massage to the government and different stockholders about reviving livelihoods of Bamboo sector of the NE States of India and its crucial factors after the Post -COVID 19. More than 1000 participants from various parts of India, Taiwan, and South Asia were attended the webinar. The entire programme was moderated by Miss Jo-Chih Wang, Specialist, CCU USR Bamboo and Bamboo Charcoal Innovation Project, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan.

Real face of yeoman service pathetic

Guwahati: The BJP-led coalition government's much hyped yeoman service stands exposed with one after returnees disclosing their miseries.  The journey by bus to the state was not at all free.  The quarantine in hotels in Guwahati lack basic facilities.  That too for Rs.5000. 3 more test COVID19 positive

Guwahati: Three more people in the state have tested positive in COVID19. This was what health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Guwahati on Friday. The trio was among the 40 others who started  Silchar from Ajmeer by a bus two days back.  Five tested positive on Thursday while the trio received confirmation report on Friday.

Guwahati likely to slip into orange zone

Guwahati: The confirmation of 4 COVID19 cases apart from death by the killer virus is likely to put Guwahati into the orange zone.  The Centre is expected to confirm it by Saturday. Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in Guwahati that the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, No 1 and No 5 GMCH Boy's Hostel apart from the B Barooah Cancer Institute have been announced as containment zones following the shocking emergence of the situation on Thursday. COVID19 claims second life

Guwahati: The killer COVID19 has claimed yet another life on Thursday which came to light only on Friday. The victim is said to have been a 16-year-old girl who belonged to the family of a staff of B Barooah Cancer Institute who died on Thursday. But the virus was tracked out only after her death.  The entire premier cancer institute of the northeastern region has been sealed.  Apart from 4 other COVID19 cases have been confirmed in Guwahati on Thursday night. Six persons of Sarbhog, Barpeta district, who came in contact with a COVID-19 positive person were quarantined at Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.

CRPF officer dies of COVID19 infection

New Delhi: The killer COVID19 has claimed yet another life on Tuesday.  Identified as Ikramul Hussain,  the CRPF sub-inspector died at a hospital in New Delhi five days after he was admitted in it.      Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of @crpfindia jawan Md Ikram Hussain who belonged to Barpeta, Assam. Council dissolved, BTAD under Guv's Rule

Kokrajhar: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has dissolved the Bodoland Territorial Council on Monday following the expiry of its term amid speculations of a widening gap between BJP and BPF. Raj Bhawan issued the notification in the evening declining BPF's prayer for an extension following the COVID19 menace that forced the authority to countermand the council polls slated for April 4. BJP president Ranjit Das on Sunday said that BTAD should come under the governor's rule as soon as the term of the BPF council expires. Retired teacher passes away

Barpeta: Former headmaster of Juro Ram Pathak Girls' High School Himangshu Pathak breathed his last on Saturday morning at his residence at Gandhinagar, Barpeta. He was 87. He left behind his wife, two sons, two daughters, grandchildren, and a host of his relatives, well-wishers.  People of Barpeta mourned for the demise of their beloved 'English Sir'.

Former governor passes away

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Bihar governor Devananda Konwar passed away after prolonged illness in Guwahati on Saturday. Konwar, who was also a senior lawyer was 83 who breathed his last at his own residence in Guwahati early in the morning. He started his political career in 1955 as he was a student and represented Thowra assembly constituency in Sivasagar district.  He was a senior cabinet minister during the Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi regimes before being appointed as governor in Bihar. Guwahati: Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expresses serious concern over the physical attack on Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami along with his wife (Republic TV editor) Samyabrata Ray Goswami in Mumbai last night and condemns the incident with strongest words.
