Former governor passes away

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Bihar governor Devananda Konwar passed away after prolonged illness in Guwahati on Saturday.

Konwar, who was also a senior lawyer was 83 who breathed his last at his own residence in Guwahati early in the morning.

He started his political career in 1955 as he was a student and represented Thowra assembly constituency in Sivasagar district. 

He was a senior cabinet minister during the Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi regimes before being appointed as governor in Bihar.

For a short spell of time he served as West Bengal and Tripura governor. 

After his retirement as governor he preferred to stay away from active politics and his death has cast a spell of gloom in the state.

State Congress president Ripun Bora along with several others condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to his bereaved family members.
