Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. In a historic happening, thousands of people acquired a huge plot of land in the outskirt of Guwahati belonging to a businessman who owned it for industrial purpose.Led by Krishak Mukti Sanggram Samiti, the local residents in Khetri thronged the huge plot of 38 bighas belonging to Bajrang Lohia alleging that the entire cultivable plot is set to be used in industrial purpose.KMSS president Akhil Gogoi told reporters that these plots would be distributed among the landless local people in Dimoria.The historic initiative took place a day after Gogoi warned a circle of powerful businessmen to hand over their plots in question to be used by the landless and flood –affected lot.
ULFA’s anti-talk faction threatens to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations with subversive activities forcing the authorities to intensify the combing operation and strict vigil across the state on Sunday.In an e-mail sent to media on Thursday, the militant outfit said that they would take resort to trouble mongering tactic to disrupt the red letter day celebrations.The warning mail issued two days after ULFA-I along with 11 other militant outfits operating in the north eastern region issued a diktat to boycott the Republic Day celebration. KMSS on Wednesday gave one week’s ultimatum to three land mafias to surrender their cultivable plot. Otherwise, these plots would be occupied.Disclosing this, the peasant body president Akhil Gogoi told reporters in a press conference that under no circumstances the trio Suresh Prithani would be allowed to retain the plots.
