Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Extradition hope in ULFA peace talk

An early extradition of Anup Chetia is set to dominate yet another peace talk between centre and ULFA in New Delhi on Wednesday. Led by chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, the pro-talk ULFA leaders are expected to mount pressure on the centre to bring the jailed secretary back from Bangladesh. Ranjan walks out of jail

NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary walks free on Sunday two days after he procured bail in all crucial cases. Immediately after walking out of the Guwahati Central jail, Daimary left for his home place Udalguri to be welcomed by the local residents. The CJM granted him bail after the NDFB boss procured no objection certificate from the investigation agencies citing his preparedness to join the peace process.

ATM thief arrested at Nazira

One person is arrested by Nazira police in connection of ATM theft case. According to police Ghanshyam Sharmah (38) stolen the ATM Card of Dilip Das of Nazira and withdrawn Rs.26000/- by using this card. A case is registered in this regard in Nazira police Station under IPC 379.

Craft exhibition underway at NEDFi Haat

Brisk voting in GMC election

Braving a rising mercury voters are lined up across 862 booths in the ongoing civic polls in Guwahati city on Wednesday. Assamtimes team came to see the huge queue of voters even before 7 in the morning. Talking Assamtimes, polling authorities hoped that the turn out would cross 80 percent. Altogether 7,06,689 voters are expected to excercise their franchise in the single phase polling on Wednesday.

Mahanta in the line of fire

Worse is yet to come for Asom Gana Parishad. The party now stands crippled with escalating revolt against president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. His alleged autocratic style of functioning is believed to have forced a circle of dedicated party leaders to join the ruling Congress. Vice president Apurba Bhattacharya will join Congress on June 24. His trusted men are also in touch with the ruling party.  Party insiders blame Mahanta and his associates for the impending exodus. GMC polling underway

Amid tight security polling in the Guwahati civic bodies begins across the city. Over 7 lakh voters are free to decide on the fate of172 ward councillors along with 356 area sabha candidates. The polling started at 7 in the morning at 862 stations. Assamtimes team came to see huge queue of voters in Beltola, Paltanbazar, Chandmari areas even before the voting started. The polling will end at 4 in the afternooo. If this weather stays the voting is expected to be higher. Counting will take place on June 24. Assam will give quick update of the polling throughout on Wednesday.
