Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

The Gauhati High Court has yet to finalise the PIL seeking the court’s intervention on the alleged corruption in APSC in the seletion of ACS, APS and allied services. According to soures, scrutiny panel has yet to take any conclusion on the PIL file by Akhil Gogoi and therefore, it is yet to be registered.The PIL sought a CBI probe, mainly on the irregularities of the 2013 examinations and the role of APSC's present Chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul.
After months of will-he-won’t he, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has announced an inquiry commission to probe the allegations of corruption in the civil services examinations.Official sources told Assam Times that Gogoi has issued order to institute an inquiry panel to be headed by a retired judge who will enquire into APSC-related allegations.The Commission will be constituted under the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act.
Jorhat district is going all out against malaria and enchephilitis after 13 people lost their lives. Official sources claimed to have distributed over 30,000 medicated mosquito nets among the people in the affected areas. These are apart from some health awareness camps.Spraying of DDT and fogging have been stepped up in the affected areas. Blood sample colletion booths are available in the district for early confirmation of the disease.
Its high time for the Supreme Court to simplify the process to update the NRC to ensure that the genuine citizines can smoothly participate in the process. Japane encephalitis wreaks havoc in Jorhat district claiming 13 people within last ten days.   Official sources told Assam Times that 7 died of acute encephalitis syndrome at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital while six others lost their lives because of Japanese encephalitis.At least 22 other are underong treatment of JE and AEX while over 12 others are waiting for test confiration.

Former GMDA minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened to take legal action against a section media for dragging his name to the Luis Berge scam.Talking to reporters at the Rajiv Bhawan premises on Wednesday, the former minister said that a section of media has been naming him in the multi crore scam bereft of any reason. “I will take file criminal and defamation cases against a section of media in a day or two,” said Dr Sarma.A visibly angry Dr Sarma said, “My name was figured in the Saradha scam. I received clean chit. But a section of media did not tender apology before me for naming me in the scam. This time I will file defamation case against them.”
People of all walks of life have welcomed the Supreme Court exempting the indigenous people from legacy data for filing the NRC forms.Talking to reporters many parties, organizations and individuals said that the latest ruling of the country’s apex court have made it easy to fill up the NRC forms without legacy data.They further said that the extension of date for filing of NRC forms beyond July 31 is a great relief.

Five persons of a family were buried alive when a huge hillock collapsed on their house in Cachar district on Wednesday.The incident took place in the wee hours at Lakhipur are when a huge hillock slipped into the house where Zubeda Khatun along with her four children lived in. “It came to light at around 10 in the morning as the local residents had to keep themselves confined to their homes because of the incessant rains,” a local resident told Assam Times over telephone.
