Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Himanta threatens media

Former GMDA minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened to take legal action against a section media for dragging his name to the Luis Berge scam.Talking to reporters at the Rajiv Bhawan premises on Wednesday, the former minister said that a section of media has been naming him in the multi crore scam bereft of any reason. “I will take file criminal and defamation cases against a section of media in a day or two,” said Dr Sarma.A visibly angry Dr Sarma said, “My name was figured in the Saradha scam. I received clean chit. But a section of media did not tender apology before me for naming me in the scam. This time I will file defamation case against them.”

NRC: SC breather for indigenous

People of all walks of life have welcomed the Supreme Court exempting the indigenous people from legacy data for filing the NRC forms.Talking to reporters many parties, organizations and individuals said that the latest ruling of the country’s apex court have made it easy to fill up the NRC forms without legacy data.They further said that the extension of date for filing of NRC forms beyond July 31 is a great relief.

Himanta claims zero role

Former GMDA minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed to have played no role in the multi crore Watergate.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function at the Rajiv Bhawan, the former minister said that whatever he did as a minister would be clear if any investigation is allowed to take place. He said that all files pertaining to the water deal is available in the GMDA office. “I don’t understand why my name is unnecessarily dragged into a controversy. The US report has named a minister Goa and not Assam. It is a simple English sentence. ”

5 dead in Silchar landslip

Five persons of a family were buried alive when a huge hillock collapsed on their house in Cachar district on Wednesday.The incident took place in the wee hours at Lakhipur are when a huge hillock slipped into the house where Zubeda Khatun along with her four children lived in. “It came to light at around 10 in the morning as the local residents had to keep themselves confined to their homes because of the incessant rains,” a local resident told Assam Times over telephone.

Flood scene grim again

The overall flood scene turns grim on Wednesday again following incessant rains that lashed parts of the state during the last 24 hours.The river Brahmaputra and its tributaries have started flowing above the danger level because of the rains. Many areas in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Jorhat and Dhemaji have come under the surging waters rendering thousands of people homeless. Rescue and relief operations are in progress in all these affected areas. If the rains refuse to halt, the scene would take more grim turn.

11 more nabbed in Bhimajuli

Sonitpur police have arrested eleven more villagers in Bhimajuli after they beheaded a loal woman branding as witch three days back.“They were arrested on the basis of the confessional statement of the main accused who was arrested hours after the gory incident,” police told Assam Times.But the wife of the main accused who played no less role in the crime has yet to be arrested. “We have yet to pick up her since she is pregnant,” said a police officer who is tracing the case.A section of the villagers in Sonitpur district bordering Arunachal Pradesh dragged a local woman out of her house to be beheaded alleging that she was a witch.

Plight of indigenous citizens

Abhoy Saikia of Hatigaon area is disappointed when he was among those who was waiting in front of a NRC centre in Guwahati to submit his documents. From 7 in the morning he was waiting for his turn. At 1 in the afternoon he lost his cool. “I am disappointed. What they are doing for so long. Why we are made to suffer even to submit the forms,” rued the 60 year old man in Hatigaon area.Same it is with Padmini Gogoi. CBI to probe watergate!

Dispur is firm on handing over the water gate probe to CBI. Sources told Assam Times that chief minister Tarun Gogoi has received some stunning inputs suggesting the multi crore scam in GMDA in 2001.“Gogoi keeps mum. But he is in a hurry to get the SC Das report. Once scam is formally confirmed the file is ready to be sent to CBI,” sources told Assam Times.
