Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

NRC process gets slow response

Scrap APSC selection: Akhil to HC

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi has urged the Gauhati High Court to scrap the selected of the Assam civil service examination conducted by the APSC two year back.In his PIL he moved in the court, Gogoi said that corruption, nepotism and favouritism work in the entire process selection process.He claimed to have obtained some glaring evidence to substantiate his allegations against APSC. 

B’deshi onslaught: where is UN

The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha demands UN intervention on the rights of indigenous people against the possible onslaught of the Bangladeshi immigrants.In a recent memorandum to the United Nations Organization (UNO), the umbrella body of 40 organizations said the Centre should implement the UN guidelines and measures to safeguard the interest of the indigenous people of the state.They further asked the UNO to send a delegation to Assam to get the actual picture of torture heaped on the indigenous people' in the name of the deportation of the Bangladeshi immigrants.

Let-up in flood fury

 There is let up in the state’s overall flood scene. The water levels of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries started receding from last night giving some sort of relief to over 13 lakh affected people in 4 districts. Only in Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts more than 400 people took shelter in relief camps.Many parts of Baksa, Dibrugarh and Kamrup districts came under the surging under waters in Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Golapara, Jorhat and Kamrup (Metro). 

550 villages under flood

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said 1,95,243 people have been affected as flood waters submerged 533 villages.   The government has opened toll free phone numbers -- 1070 for the State Emergency Operation Centre, and 1077 for the District Emergency Operation Centre. Talking to Assam Times, official sources said the flood waters have also affected over 8,245 hectares of crop land. The government asked the district administrations to arrange relief and rescue material, and take stock of the infrastructural damage.

Bhutan like crackdown in Myanmar

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi strongly advocated an operation all clear like army action inside Myanmar.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, he said after Bangladesh and Bhutan, now Myanmar is the fertile ground for the north eastern insurgent outfit.Gogoi said that steps are on to firmly deal with the situation in Tinsukia where suspected ULFA militants gunned down a local trader and his daughter at Bijuliban area for refusing to pay ransom.          

APSC: Akhil moves HC with PIL

Finally Akhil Gogoi moved the Gauhati High Court alleging rampant corruption in the Assam Civil Service examination .The KMSS president who has been spearheading the fight against APSC  has filed a public interest litigation seeking the court’s intervention.Talking to reporters he said that he was waiting for governor’s intervention after he appraised him of the rampant corruption in APSC with evidence. But despite assurance Governor PB Acharrya refrained from taking any step.

AASU leader, CRPF officer killed in firing

A local AASU leader was killed and at least then others sustained injured when security forces sprang upon a group of people who hit the streets in Nalbari demanding Tihu as a sub division.The incident took place when the local residents in large were holding a huge protest meeting near the National Highway No 37 in Tihu reiterating their demand to declare Tihu as a Nalbari district sub division.
