Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

There seems to be no respite from sweltering heat that disrupts normal life across the state on Wednesday.  Wednesday morning started at 29 degree Celsius and it the figure has gone up to 35 at 9 in the morning which is expected to touch 38 degree Celsius by the afternoon. Two persons died and five others sustained injury when a vehicle carrying a group of school teachers hit a truck in Goalpara district on Wednesday.The tragic accident took place at Bhimajuli in Mendipathar area where the teachers who were travelling to Tinsukia from Dudhnoi hit on a stranded truck in the wee hours. They were on way back to Tinsukia after attedning the teachers' meet in Dudhnoi which concluded on Tuesday.Identified as Rajiv Gohain, the teacher from Tinsukia died on the spot. The conductor of the vehicle Dilip Roy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital where he was admitted.Five other seriously injured have been battling for life at the civil hospital.
The Assam Public Service Commission will accept the applications for ACS ((preliminary) examination till August 1.According to a notification, the candidates would be able to submit the applications for combined competitive examination for ACS, APS and allied services till Saturday midnight.

Assam is known for its highest power tariff structure where the consumers have been bearing the brunt. North-East Electric Power Corporation has yet to get a whopping Rs 1,000 crore outstanding amount from Assam and Meghalaya as power dues.According to NEEPCO Chairman and Managing Director P C Pankaj, they have yet to realize Rs 536.64 crore from Assam. The outstanding amount for Meghalaya stands at Rs 429.4 crore.“The actual amount of due for receipt from Assam and Meghalaya was Rs 269.2 crore and Rs 288.21 crore, respectively, with a surcharge of Rs 267.44 crore and Rs 140.83 crore,” he said.Same it is in the case of other north-eastern states. Senior cabinet minister Rockybul Hussain will look after the power portfolio in addition to his agriculture department. North east insurgents have been resorting to illicit trade in drugs and fake currency to make money.This was what Mukul Sahay said when the additional DGP was talking to reporters in Guwahati in the sidelines of a FICCI function on Tuesday.Sahay said funds to these insurgents come mainly from the smugglers to ensure their safety and security. He observed that funds, mostly, comes from tobacco, drugs and fake currency rackets in the entire north eastern region.He observed that illicit trade has yet to be accorded priority because of traditional crimes like insurgency and ethnic clash.
