ASEAN-India car rally

The day was 25th November when a contingent of 31 vehicles were flagged off from from the city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia with the objective of forging new opportunities of trade ties among the ASEAN countries. The rallyists opened the door to the ASEAN countries to fruitfully use the 8000 km route to foster new economic tie. The morning of 16th December saw thousands of enthusiastic people gathering on the both side of National Highway 39 to catch a glimpse of the much awaited India Asean Car rally. The rally arrived at Rangajan Tini Ali on NH-39 at around 10 am and the cheering crowd weaving colourful flags of the different ASEAN nations greeted the rallyists from where they headed to NRL Township for a stopover.



The Golaghat Dist. Administration in association with NRL authority welcomed them in a traditional assamese way with a “Gamusa” and a rose. It was followed by a lunch of exquisite assamese cuisine which was accompanied by showcase of assamese culture and folk art bihu and jhoomur. “I was very much excited on being a part of the rally for the first time and we had shown the way and now it is upto the respective governments how to make the best use of this route.” Nou Maneth Athana, a participant of the rally and a reporter with Cambodia News Channel, said in her interaction with AssamTimes.



This time there were eight women participants in the rally including 3 from India, 2 from Singapore, 1 from Cambodia and 2 from Myanmar. Karlo De Guzman, a participant from Phillipines shared his excitement to Assamtimes by saying that when they entered into Indian territory they received a message on their vehicle’s radio from the chairman of the Mahindra group who hailed them as a new columbuses and welcomed to India, which meant a lot to them. For William, a participant from Singapore, the rally ended on a positive note and the respective govts had made impeccable arrangements which had made the journey a memorable one and for the first time in his life he felt as if he was driving like a head of a state. After the one hour stopover at NRL Township, the rally leaves for the ceremonial flag down at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati.

Journalists stages sit-in demonstration in Golaghat

Journalists from various media organisations today conducted a sit in demonstration in front of DC office Golaghat, protesting alleged assault on Rajib Dey, the camera person of Prime News, a private TV channel by a scrap merchant and demanding the arrest of the culprit. It is to be noted that on 16th September, the scrap merchant was involved in illegal trading of goods formerly seized by the excise department which included a large number of tin drums. Police lathicharge KMSS activists at Tengani, Golaghat

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity’s (KMSS) activists were lathicharged in Tengani area of Golaghat district today. The KMSS activists were staging a rail blockade programme at Jamuguri and Tengani area at Golaghat District demanding the return of the ships carrying turbines to the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric project. More than 30 people were injured after the Police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells in a bid to calm the protesters down. The injured were admitted in Golaghat Civil Hospital, six of them were seriously injured. Police also detained KMSS central committee executive member Soneswar Narah.

Mobile theft racket busted; 2 held

Golaghat police with the assistance of Chungajan Police have arrested two mobile thieves on the night of 3rd September. The arrested were identified as Tridip Kalita (24) and Anil Sutradhar (22) both hailing from Rupjyoti Nagar and Tetelitol area of Golaghat respectively. Police have seized 30 mobile handsets of Samsung Company from the duo. It is to be mentioned that on the night of 1st September the duo of Tridip Kalita and Anil Sutradhar broke open the lock of shutter of Baruah’s Card Mahal, a mobile repairing centre situated in Sangit Mahavidyalay Complex in Golaghat and stole a total of 130 mobile handsets. AANLA to go on uniliteral ceasefire from Sept 1

The extremist outfit All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), which was formed in the year 2004 in Nahortoli located in the sensitive area of Assam-Nagaland Border under Golaghat district for the cause of interest and development of adivasi community today declares that it will go on unilateral ceasefire from 1st September. Holiday court held at Golahat

As per the notification issued by the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court to hold Holiday Courts with the objective of improving the justice delivery system and to increase the number of Court working hours using the existing infrastructure a special holiday court was held at Golaghat on 27th and 28th settled 1209 cases relating to petty offences, motor vehicles, accidents, family disputes and societal quarrels. One arrested for creating fake account at a social networking site

A team of CID today arrested one Nekibur Rahman (24) from Mearapani in Golaghat district for allegedly creating a fake profile of State PWD Minister Ajanta Neog on popular social networking site Facebook. A laptop, a mobile phone and SIM card has also been seized from him. Militants open fires on NH 37

In stepped up offensive ahead of Independence Day one person was killed and several others were injured when tribal separatists of the outlawed Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) opened indiscriminate firing along the National Highway 37 in Panbari area near Bokakhat in Golaghat district.
