Birendra Baishya vocal on declaring tea as National Drink at Rajya Sabha
Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Birendra Prasad Baishya was today vocal in the Parliament over the issue of declaring Tea as National Drink of India. He raised the issue under Rule 180 (A) for mentioning a matter of urgent public importance in the house. While talking to Assamtimes, Baishya said that “I would like to draw the attention of the Govt. Of India with an appeal to declare tea as a National Drink of India which is not just a product or commodity for people of the country, it emerged as a culture and integrating with the word chai chai reverberates from east to west and north to south”. He further added that Assam is synonymous to the outside world with Assam tea and 83% household of the country consumes Tea, which is increasing at the rate of 3% annually and he is very hopeful that the government will take up the matter expeditiously and do the needful towards declaring Tea as a National Drink. It is to be mentioned that Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi had already declared Tea as a State Drink at the World Tea science congress at the Tocklai centenary celebration in the month of November last year and the CM also resolved during the budget session where he announced that the central government has been requested to declare 'tea' as the national drink. Meanwhile North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) has welcomed the initiative of Baishya and hopeful that the government would fulfill their expectation.
