Lakshmi Nath Phukan and Harendra Nath Baruah Memorial Award ceremony held at Golaghat
The Golaghat Press Club has decided to organise two awards in the memories of Lakshmi Nath Phukan and Harendra Nath Baruah, the pioneers of journalism in the state. In this connection an award ceremony was held today at Amateur Theatre Hall, Golaghat where Prafulla Chandra Baruah has been conferred Lakshmi Nath Phukan Memorial Award while Jadu Kakoty had been conferred Harendra Nath Baruah Memorial Award. Late Lakshmi Nath Phukan in whose name the award was given was born at Dergaon and studied up to class ten. But due to his sheer determination and hard work he rose to a journalist of repute and worked in various newspaper groups such as The Statesman, Associated Press, Hindustan Standard, The Assam Tribune etc.
On the other hand Harendra Nath Baruah was born in Golaghat and had a prosperous career in the field of journalism. He was the editor of “Natun Asomiya” a newspaper started by Indra Kamal Bezbaruah and Neel Kamal Bezbaruah and it can be described as the golden era of his career. His book “Reflection on Assam and Pakistan” even found a mention in the autobiography of India’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The recipients of the award Prafulla Chandra Baruah and Jadu Kakoty are hailed as the frontrunners in the field of journalism in the state. The awards were given in an august gathering in the presence of many dignitaries such as Dr. Nagen Saikia former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha, Niketo Iralu, prominent intellectual and thinker of Nagaland, Sanjib Gohain Baruah Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat, Dr. Ajit Baruah Chairman Golaghat Municipal Board etc. It is to be mention that Golaghat Press Club also felicitated Niketo Iralu as Harbinger of Peace. The meeting held on the occasion was presided by Apurba Ballav Goswami President Golaghat Press Club. Due to his ill health Jadu Kakoty was unable to present at the award ceremony.
