Assam Association, Delhi celebrated Magh Bihu, the harvest festival of Assam, which marks the end of the harvesting season, and ushering in of the Spring, with a day long programme at the Central Civil Secretariat Sports Ground, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi today.
The celebrations started with a welcome address by Justice(Retd) Dr. Mukundakam Sharma, President, Assam Association, Delhi. It was followed by the flag hosting & the lighting of the ‘Meji’- the traditional bonfire in the gracious presence of eminent personalities like Dr. Yoganand Shastri, Speaker of Delhi Assembly.
As part of the day-long programme, drawing and painting competition was organized among the children. Varieties of sports competition also took place among different age-groups. The function continued with the release of "Samayik"- the magazine of Assam Association by eminent journalist and former High Commissioner to UK Mr Dr. Kuldip Nayar. The magazine is an interface for experience sharing, and a publishing platform for poems, news, and other varieties of articles by established and amateur writers.
A gourmet feast for about 1000 people was organised with traditional ‘peetha’, ‘kaji nemu’, ‘bih jolokiya’ couriered from back home. Thereafter a select cultural programme with artists from various parts of NCR was presented for entertainment of the joyous crowd. Mr. Ramakant Goswami, Minister of Industries, Labour and Elections, Government of NCT of Delhi gave an inspiring speech, inaugurating the cultural event.
Towards the fag end of the celebrations, winners were awarded with prizes and certificates.
This year, Assamese community living in different parts of the capital city came together in huge numbers to celebrate this occasion. The weather was quite sunny and comfortable.
