Itanagar: The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), Itanagar, celebrated Earth Day 2025 with a two-day event at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Hawai, Anjaw District, under the global theme “Our Earth, Our Planet: Renewable Energy Now.” The program aimed to foster environmental awareness and encourage active community participation.
CESHS, a premier institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, is dedicated to research in climatology, geoscience, hydrology, and renewable energy. Known for its pioneering work in geothermal and tidal energy, CESHS actively supports the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision for a Green India and energy self-reliance.
The Earth Day celebrations kicked off on April 21 with drawing and essay competitions at JNV Hawai, where students vividly expressed their ideas on environmental conservation through art and writing. On April 22, a plantation drive and a cleanliness campaign were organized to highlight the importance of sustainability and responsible environmental practices.
The event was graced by Shri Vekhillum Bellai, EAC Hawai, as Chief Guest, and Shri Bredenso Yun, AMDO, as Guest of Honour. They were joined by Shri Chagam Dolo, BDO Hawai; Shri Sodin Chikro, Political Assistant, Anjaw; and forest department officials. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Bredenso Yun stressed the need for sustainable development and proactive measures to mitigate environmental degradation. The JNV Principal urged students to incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily lives, drawing on the Mishmi people's traditional reverence for nature. Shri Chagam Dolo emphasized living in harmony with the environment and proposed initiatives for local waste reduction. Chief Guest Shri Vekhillum Bellai spoke on the critical role of renewable energy in securing a sustainable future and encouraged students to pledge their commitment to protecting the planet.
The program concluded with a prize distribution ceremony for the competition winners, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the event.
In addition to the celebrations at JNV Hawai, CESHS also observed Earth Day at its Itanagar campus. Staff members engaged in a cleanliness drive and a plantation activity around the office premises, further demonstrating the Centre’s dedication to promoting environmental stewardship from within.
