Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.


The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.


She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.


Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.


A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

2 dead as wedding bus skids off NH in Barpeta

At least two people were killed and 25 others were injured in a road mishap in Barpeta district on Wednesday midnight. The incident took place at Garhchuk near Bajali when a wedding bus skidded off the National Highway. The bus on the way to Simala-Bajai Bhethua, when the driver of the vehicle lost control and fell off the highway. The deceased duo were identified as Irak Bodo and Shukra Barman, died on the spot and 25 others were injured. The injured people were rushed to the hospital.

Powerful IED found in Tinsukia; ULFA hand suspected

Security forces found a powerful Improvised Explosive Device in Tinsukia district on Thursday. The IED was recovered from a shop at Kakajan near Philobari under Dumduma police station during a search operation. According to police, suspected militants kept the bomb at the shop for explosion.

New rebel outfit leader held in Sonitpur

Security forces arrested a self-styled leader of a new militant group at Gahpur in Sonitpur district on Thursday. The nabbed militant was identified as Bipul Bora and he claimed himself as the self-styled commander-in-chief of a new outfit group Sanjukta Rakta Bahini. Police claimed that the militant was involved in extortion in the district.

Mahanta vs Hazarika as AGP goes to poll

Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is facing a tough battle against leader Padma Hazarika in the race for AGP presidentship in Guwahati on Thursday. Mahanta, the two time chief minister, arrived in the party headquarters at Ambari at around 9-30 in the morning and casted his own vote. He was followed by his nearest rival and Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika who exercise his franchise. The counting of votes would take place from 5 in the evening when the polling would conclude at 4 in the afternoon. For the firs time, the regional party holds the polls to elect its president following the failure to arrive at a consensus candidate.

Hospital on Wheels now in Hojai Sub Division

National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) Assam sanctioned one mobile medical unit (MMU) exclusively for Hojai sub division under the administrative control of Jugijan BPHC. The MMU is formally flagged off by Dr. A.K Dey, minister irrigation & soil conservation, government of Assam on Sunday 22nd April 2012 after addressing a public meeting at Hojai FRU. “MMU is a new initiative of government to bring health care to the doorstep of unnerved rural people of Hojai sub division” said Mr. Dey in his speech. Mishap in B’putra: 4 meet watery grave

Four women met watery grave an overloaded boat capsized in Dhubri district on Tuesday. According to information, the victims were brick kiln labourers. All four bodies had been fished out while seven others have been rescued. Nearly 11 people were brick kiln labourers had gone to Dheerghat in the morning hours. They did not work and decided to return to Chapar and took a boat ride to shorten the distance. The boat capsized in the middle of the river due to over-loading.
