People from Assam, who have made Kuwait their second home, are all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu this year with even more fanfare than ever before, under the aegis of Asom Association Kuwait, which was established and registered with the Indian Embassy, Kuwait, in 2009. This Organization formalized the celebration of Bihu in the State of Kuwait, and became instrumental in showcasing the rich culture & tradition of Assam. In the 3rd AGM held on 12th February 2011, a new Executive Committee was formed with Sri Anup Bora as Hony. President and Sri Bijan Goswami as Hony. General Secretary, to lead the activities of organization through the year 2011-12.
Over the past few years, the Assamese community in Kuwait had the opportunity to enjoy the enthralling performances by the likes of Zubin Garg and Manas Robin, who brought lot of glitz and color to the festivities here in in this part of the middle-east. This year the community is all set to sway to the music and melodies of yet another great singer from Assam – Shmti. Shanta Uzir. She will be accompanied by her Music Composer husband Sh. Bhupen Uzir. The cultural evening set for the 13th May, will be enriched by her Bihu songs along with her other famous hits. The venue for the ‘Shanta Uzir Nite’ will be the famous “Al Murjan” Banquet hall of “Hotel Crowne Plaza”, where performances from the local Assamese community will add variety, color and enthusiasm amongst the community.
Earlier, the onset of Bohag was celebrated by the Assamese community here by organizing a day long festivities of ‘Khel-dhemali’ and ‘ Bhoj’ in the Fintas Park, located in Mahboula, Kuwait. Members along with their children participated in the fun games and contests and the winners were suitably awarded with prizes and gifts.
Among the notable fresh initiatives of the Asom Association Kuwait, was the formal launch of a website www.kuwaitotasom.com to showcase and highlight the activities of the Organization. Members have enthusiastically responded by making this virtual forum a window to all that the organization stands for. Appropriately, the Assamese community has strived to create what the name of the website suggests Kuwait-ot-asom i.e an Assam in Kuwait.

A major incident of blast was averted when Assam Rifles recovered two powerful improvised explosive devises from a bus at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on Wednesday.According to information, acting on specific inputs, the 44 Assam Rifles personnel recovered the bomb from a private bus coming here from Orang around 11 am. The two explosives were safely defused by the jawans, the sources said. This is the second one case of bomb recovery this week. Earlier on Monday, a major disaster was averted when a powerful bomb kept by suspected ULFA was recovered from a Guwahati-Nalbari private long-distance bus in Nalbari district's Borkura.
Barely a few hours after the killing of 6 NDFB cadres during an encounter in Karbi Anglong, unidentified miscreants gunned down four persons of a same family of a Congress ward commissioner in Diphu on Tuesday.According to information, armed miscreants stormed into the residence of Congress ward commissioner Apu Das and gunned down Apu's wife Manju Das, two daughters and a home tutor at around 7-45 in the evening. Apu Das was not available at that moment. After a brief lull, suspected Naga rebels gunned gunned down four Dimasa persons in the trouble torn North Cachar hills district on Tuesday. According to information, the incident took place at the Norman Bunglow under Mahur police station in the hills district as they were on the way to Haflong. Six NDFB rebels were killed during a heavy gun battle with army in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.According to information, the encounter took place at Donghap area in the hills district on Tuesday morning. Acting on a specific information, Red Horns Division army jawans launched a massive operation in the area and thus the encounter took place for several hours. Some a few others, however, managed to escape from the spot. After weeks of will-they-won't-they, police have arrested Bokakhat MLA Jiten Gogoi who have physically assaulted a forest official two months back at the Kaziranga National Park.Gogoi was arrested a day after the Gauhati High Court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea he moved after police initiated action to arrest him. Notably, Gogoi with Thowra MLA and former ULFA rebel Kushal Duwari assulted a forest official at the KNP when they were denied permission to fish inside the park. The court further has rejected Kushal Duwari's anticipatory bail plea and since then he has been missing.
