Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured

Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

Waiting for regionalism revival

Top regional parties of the north eastern region are holding a two days' convention  in Guwahati on Saturday to revive regionalism just six months before the Lok Sabha polls.     Convened by AGP, the conference began at the Hotel Brahmaputra Ashoka in the morning. Apart from SAP leader Surjit Singh Barnala, Nagaland chief minister Neiphu Rio and former Meghalaya chief minister Dr Donkuper Roy and former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta attended the convention. The close door meet of the regionalism torchbearers are understood to have formulate strategies to take on Congress and BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Storm lashes Jorhat

A huge storm left the entire west Jorhat completely ravaged  uprooting many trees and disrupting surface communicationonSaturday midnight. The storm that struck Pulibor, Dohotia and Cinamora ravaged hundreds of houses leaving thousands domestic animals dead. Falling of huge trees, electric and telephone posts on the roads heavilly disrupted the communications. Efforts are on to restore the communication network.

Burning protest again

The move to hold Rabha autonomous body election triggers a fresh orgy of violent protest in the Rabha Hasong areas of Kamrup and Goalpara districts. Thousands of non Rabha people in these areas have come out to the streets to launch the civil obidience movement in protest against the autonomous body poll slated for next month. Protesters in large number stopped the trains in Krishnai. Some others burnt tyres to block the movement of traffic from early in the morning. Over a dozen of vehicles have been set on fire by the non Rabha protesters.  Bandh supporters at Boko blocked the Chilarai Express for several hours.

CLP targets huge win in LS polls

Ending all differences the Congress legislatures on Saturday vowed to unitedly fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Dispur. Talkinp to reporters at the end of the CLP meet, Gogoi said that the differences among the ministers and MLAs were sorted out adding that the time has come to stand united to put up a rare performance in the upcoming general polls. "We do target the all 14 seats in the polls," said a visibly relaxed Gogoi flanked by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Rockybul Hussain who later took Gogoi to Koinadhara.       Contrary to what was expected, the CLP meet ended peacefully in presence of APCC chief Bhubneswar Kalita in Dispur which contined till 2PM....

Dissidence over in CLP!

Finally the things in the Congress legislature body seem to have dramatically changed. Crippling dissidence against chief minister Tarun Gogoi is over if Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is to be believed. Addressing a press conference jointly with Rockybul Hussain after the end of the CLP meeting, Dr Sarma who led the dissidents said the the difference has been sorted out. He disclosed that never did he campaigned to dethorn Gogoi. Both the ministers said that the CLP meet resolved to unitedly fight to show outstanding performance in the upcoming general polls. The meeting attended by APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita set up a 5 member panel to address the concern of the MLAs and ministers who openly...

Gogoi downplays reshuffle demand

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has categorically refused to reshuffle his council of minister. Taking up a letter of request of the kind in the party's legislature body meeting in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said that the reshuffle is not required at this moment. He said that he was open for the excercise as situation warrants. He silently listened to the MLAs and ministers as they vented ire on the performance of a section of ministers. The 3 hour long meeting ended with a pledge to unitedly fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Then Gogoi left for Delhi to arrange his son's wedding ceremony.

Anger over non performanc​e

A section of ministers has come in for sharp critism for alleged under performance. A circle of ministers and MLAs, known for waging war against Tarun Gogoi and a few of his trusted men, came down heavily on the non performing ministers. Those who vented anger agaist Gogoi's men were Pradan Barua, Piyush Hazarika. They were countered by Nilmonisen Deka.  Anjan Dutta alleged that the ministers, mostly, have lost control over the officers and demanded steps to rein in this trend. Sarat Borkotoky  also expressed concern over this uneasy trend.

Assam Cong MLAs meet in Dispur

A brainstorming legislature party meet of Assam Congress is trying to sort out differences among a section of ministers and MLAs. The crucial meet, first time in the history, has begun at the Assam assembly premises at 10 in the morning on Saturday where a section  ofMLAs and ministers stressed expedited development process to woo the voters in the upcoming general elections. The ministers and MLAs, known to be closed to dissident leader Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma were expected to vent open anger against chief minister and a few of his associates. But there is hardly any possibility in view of high command's instruction to keep quiet.
